Taxonomy. Cyclopes xinguensis Miranda et al., 2017 View in CoL ,

“Vitoria do Xingu, Para, Brazil (Usina Belo Monte) (03°17°12”S; 051°53’48"W) .” This species is monotypic.

Distribution. E Brazilian Amazon, limited in N by Amazon River, in W by Rio Madeira, and in E by Rio Xingu; S limit is unknown. View Figure

Descriptive notes. No specific data are available. Dorsal color of the Xingu Silky Anteater is gray, rump is yellow, venter is pale yellowish, and legs and tail are gray. Dorsalstripe is evident, and ventral stripe is indistinct and irregular. Fronto-nasal region of skull is not depressed, giving a

straight profile. External aperture of ear is directed laterally. Naso-maxillary sutures are about parallel to each other, with wide fronto-maxillary suture. Fronto-parietalis triangular, and pterygoid bone overlaps tympanic bulla.

Status and Conservation. Not assessed on The IUCN Red List. The Xingu Silky Anteater lives in an area with substantial environmental degradation and is probably threatened with extinction. Its distribution and population status, considering recent taxonomic changes, need to be urgently evaluated.
