TYPE LOCALITY: "America meridionali;" restricted to Brazil, Pernambuco, Pernambuco [= Recife], by Thomas (1911a) .

DISTRIBUTION: South America east of the Andes from Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, and the Guianas, south to Uruguay and N Argentina.

STATUS: CITES - Appendix III ( Guatemala).

SYNONYMS: bivittata Desmarest, 1817 ; chapadensis J. A. Allen, 1904; crispa Rüppell, 1842 ; kriegi Krumbiegel, 1940; longicaudata Wagner, 1844 ; longicaudata Turner, 1853 (preoccupied); myosura Pallas, 1766 ; nigra Desmarest, 1804 ; opisthomelas Gray, 1873; quichua Thomas, 1927; straminea Cope, 1889; tamandua G.
