• Relatively small to medium-sized insectivorous bats with ornate facial growths including horseshoe-shaped plate between mouth and nares and ears without tragus.

• 5-16- 5 cm.

• Palearctic, Afrotropical, Indo-Malayan, and Australasian Regions.

• Deserts, forests, and mountainous areas, mainly tropical but extending into temperate regions to c. 52° N.

• 1 genus, 109 species, 199 taxa.

• 1 species Critically Endangered, 6 species Endangered, 6 species Vulnerable; none Extinct since 1600.
