The transfer of this species to Jacquemontia is proposed, because it has elliptic stigma lobes (“stigmate bilobo, lobis ellipticis obtusis divergentibus”) and short, stellate hairs.

Specimens of Jacquemontia frankeana have frequently been identified as J. holosericea ( Weinmann, 1828: 17; O’Donell, 1953: 357) [= J. menispermoides Choisy (1838: 63) ]. The two are morphologically similar ( Table 1), sharing corymbiform inflorescences; sepals that are glabrous and ciliate, sometimes ciliate only at the apex of the inner sepals; outer sepals that are longer than the inner ones and trichomes that are 4–5-radiate. Both species are also frequent in coastal areas in Southeastern Brazil. However, they may be distinguished because J. frankeana has glabrescent leaves with acuminate apices and adpressed hairs on both surfaces whereas J. holosericea has tomentose leaves with obtuse apices, erect to adpressed hairs on the adaxial surface, and only erect hairs on the abaxial surface.

Two other species are morphologically similar to J. frankeana ( Table 1): J. ciliata Sandwith (1930: 156) , which is distinguished by its stellate-hairy branches and leaves, the 3-rayed trichomes, equal to subequal sepals and the obovate to oblong inner sepals (ovate inner sepals in J. frankeana ); and J. glaucescens Choisy (1838: 64) , which is distinguished by the 6–8-rayed stellate trichomes which are mixed with multiradiate trichomes, and by the glabrescent to glabrous sepals with non-ciliate margins.

Jacquemontia frankeana is known only from Brazil, occurring in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina, in Restinga (coastal sand dunes) and Montane Ombrophilous Dense Forest of the coastal zone, growing along forest edges.

Hallier (1899), published the name J. uleana based on a specimen collected by E. H. G. Ule in Rio de Janeiro. He distinguished it from J. menispermoides (= J. holosericea ) by its adpressed hairy, glabrescent leaves, not realizing that Schlechtendal (1834) had previously described C. frankeanus . When O’Donell (1953) considered J. menispermoides as a synonym of J. holosericea , he similarly distinguished J. uleana by the adpressed indumentum, but did not mention C. frankeanus , rendering the present combination necessary.

The name Jacquemontia uleana is lectotypified here and the isotype deposited in R is selected as lectotype since the holotype in B was destroyed. This material was chosen because the duplicate in R is complete and in good condition. Furthermore, the name is based on a collection made in Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil) where the herbarium R is located.
