27. Lemula (s. str.) japonica Tamanuki, 1938 View in CoL

(Figs. XIII-27, XIV-27, XVI-21)

Lemula japonica Tamanuki, 1938: 166 View in CoL , fig. 1a. Type locality: Kamikôchi, Nagano Pref., Japan.—Tamanuki, 1939: 95, fig. 43.—N. Ohbayashi, 2007: 362, pl. 6, fig. 1.

Diagnosis. Male: BL = 7.5–9.2 mm. Head with vertex to occiput black and yellowish brown in front of antennal insertions; antennae yellowish brown; pronotum glossy blackish brown; elytra glossy blackish brown and getting paler toward apex, sometimes with metallic green tint around basal area; legs with meso- and meta-femora brown; pro-femora, tibiae and tarsi yellowish brown. Head around occiput furnished with grayish brown pubescence; pronotum with fine grayish hairs; elytra moderately covered with blackish brown slanted pubescence; ventral surface with yellowish brown hairs.

Head moderately covered with distinct punctures; antenna rather long, reaching apical fourth of elytra.

Pronotum slightly longer than width across lateral tubercles (PL/PW = 1.07), constricted at a little behind anterior margin and slightly so before basal margin, with a triangular tubercles near middle of each side; disk distinctly inflated with deep median longitudinal depression, sparsely covered with fine punctures.

Elytra nearly twice as long as humeral width (EL/EW = 2.03), with humeral angles projected and weakly constricted behind humeri, then slightly widened toward apical fifth; disk moderately provided with small punctures.

Endophallus (Type B). Dorsal view: CT slightly swollen laterally, dm ginko-leaf shape and ds small sphericity with oblique lds; PB strongly widened from pc with proximal elongate tongue-shaped dm, then sharply constricted to ac; APH spherical form. Lateral view: CT slightly inflated ventrally; PB projected dorsally and swollen ventrally; APH reverse teardrop shaped.

Female: BL = 8.1–9.2 mm. Almost same with male, but elytra slightly shorter than twice humeral width (EL/ EW = 1.94), and antennae more or less shorter than male.

Type material examined. Lemula japonica Tamanuki, 1938 : Holotype ♀ ( MNHH), “Kamikôchi / Shinano / 27. VII. 1931 / T. Iida ”, “ Holotype / K. Tamanuki ”, “ Lemula japonica Tamanuki / ³ų"Ą>"ナカ§*‼ / det Tamanuki”.

Other material examined. [ Japan]: Sagashio-spa, Nagano Pref., [1♂, 23-VI-1978, K. Shimizu leg.]; Tokugo Pass, Nagano Pref. [1♀, 22-VII-1967, M. Tomokuni leg.; 1♀, 7-VII-1961, M. Ôtake leg.]; Mt. Ontake , Ôtakimura , Nagano Pref. [4♂♂, 1,700 m, 8-VII-2005, S. Nagai leg. (G-919)]; Kami-Nikkawa-pass, Yamanashi Pref. [1♀, 11- VI-1972, collector unknown]; Nikkawa Forest road, Enzan, Yamanashi Pref. [1♂, 28-VI-1986, K. Nagata leg.]; Hiwada-kogen, Takane-mura, Gifu Pref. [1♂, 27-VI-1995, K. Ishida leg. (G-914)]; Abô-daira, Hirayu, Gifu Pref. [1♂, 1,600–1,700 m, 26-VI-2016, H. Hasegawa leg. (G-950)] .

Distribution. Japan (Honshu).

Ecology. Flight period: June–July. Flower records: Actinidia , Sorbus , Rosa , Acer , Symplocos ., Aruncus , Rhododendron .

Remarks. This species is characterized by the lustrous chestnut brown elytral color. Its distribution is restricted to mountainous area of central Japan.

The holotype data in the original description ( Tamanuki, 1938) was written as “ ♀, Kamikôchi, Nagano Prefec- ture, 27-VI-1931, K. Ikeda leg. [in Ohbayashi's collection]”. However Tamanuki (1939) noted in his book of Fauna Nipponica that “the type specimen is only one female collected at Kamikôchi in the end of June, 1931 by Toshitake Iida”. Indeed the holotype specimen is presently preserved in the collection of MNHH and its label is “Kamikochi, Shinamo (= Nagano), 27-VII-1931, T. Iida leg.” Thus, the exact data of the holotype female specimen (MNHH) would be “Kamikôchi, Nagano pref., 27-VI-1931, T. Iida leg.”.
