Diagnosis of the genus Telobella

3+3 pigmented eyes. Mandible tridentate, the distal tooth subdivided in several small teeth. Maxilla styliform. Blue pigment absent from the body. Plurichaetosis weak and limited to lateral tubercles. No lateral migration of Di chaetae on abd.V. No supernumerary Schaeta on DL tubercles of th.IIIII nor on L tubercles of abd.IIII. One supernumerary Schaeta on L tubercle of abd.IV. Dorsoexternal tubercle separate or fused to DL on abd.V. One macrochaeta Di, and one or three macrochaetae De on head. Two or three Di chaetae on th.IIIII. Macrochaetae and tubercles present on Di of abd.V. Claw with 1 inner tooth.

Affinities of Telobella

Telobella differs from Lobella by having a simple, tridentate mandible with an apical tooth subdivided into a few minute teeth (multidentate in Lobella ), and an additional Schaeta on the lateral tubercle of abd.IV (no additional Schaetae in Lobella ). It differs from Protolobella by having a styliform maxilla (thick, with short dentate and ciliate lamellae in Protolobella). Other related genera are Paralobella Cassagnau & Deharveng, 1984, which differs by the presence of additional Schaetae on the lateral tubercles of abd.I to IV (only on abd.IV in Telobella), and Lobellina Yosii, 1956 which differs by the absence of additional Schaetae on the lateral tubercles of abd.I to IV, and the presence of two macrochaetae De on head. All these genera need however to be revised.
