Type Locality: Sierra Leone.

Vernacular Names: African Brush-tailed Porcupine.

Synonyms: Atherurus armata Gervais 1854 ; Atherurus burrowsi Thomas 1902 ; Atherurus centralis Thomas 1895 ; Atherurus turneri St. Leger 1932 .

Distribution: Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Dem. Rep. Congo, Kenya, Uganda, S Sudan.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Includes centralis and turneri ; see Misonne (1974:8).
