Iphinoe maculata Ledoyer, 1965 View in CoL

Iphinoe maculata Ledoyer 1965: 255 View in CoL , pl. 1 fig. 2A, 2B, pl. 5 fig. 2, pl. 9 fig. 2, pl. 13 fig. 2, pl. 18 fig. 3–4; Ledoyer 1968: 175; Corbera & Cardell 1995; Corbera & Garcia-Rubies 1998: Figs. 4C View FIGURE 4 ; 5B View FIGURE 5 .

Remarks. Iphinoe maculata is similar to I. trispinosa . These two species share an absence of plumose setae on the pereopod 2 carpus and the fact that the first antennae is as long as the body. Iphinoe maculata differs from I. trispinosa in the proportions of the carapace and the form of the sternal process, which is quadridentate ( Corbera & Garcia-Rubies 1998). Females of I. maculata differ from I. trispinosa in the uropodal seta formula (7–9;4–7+12 vs. 10;5+15, respectively). Iphinoe maculata differs from Iphinoe douniae for the presence of setae (≥10) of the uropod peduncle and for the absence of plumose setae on pereopod 2.

Distribution and ecology. Iphinoe maculata was found in the western Mediterranean Sea: Gulf of Lyons ( Ledoyer 1965, 1968; Macquart-Moulin 1991), Barcelona coast ( Corbera & Cardell 1995), Blanes ( Corbera 1995) and Algeciras Bay, and Alboran Sea (Sánchez Moyano et al. 2001).

The species has never been reported from the Italian coast, nor was it found in our samples.

This species exhibits a preference for organic fine sands and coarse sands influenced by bottom currents ( Ledoyer 1965) although in the Medes Islands it was found on littoral detritic bottoms (5.4 m deep) and on Posidonia oceanica beds (11 m deep) ( Corbera & Garcia-Rubies 1998).
