Diagnosis. Hypatopa can be separated from its congeners by the proximal flange being setose and intermixed with spines on the ventral and outer margins. Other diagnostic characters in the male genitalia include the gnathos fused with the tegumen, complete or notched medially on the posterior margin; the valva divided: the dorsal part of the valva with the distal portion of costa extending dorsad, forming a setose, clubbed, costal process, extending ventrad and with a ridge fusing the dorsal edge of the protuberant proximal flange; and the ventral part of the valva mostly broadened basally and produced to a narrow, elongate process distally.

Hypatopa is similar to Auximobasis Walsingham, 1892 in the male genitalia, but it can be distinguished from the latter by the dorsal part of the valva having a proximal flange; in Auximobasis , the dorsal part of the valva has an elongate basal process.
