Key for the species of the Section Semibegoniella from Colombia
This key is intended to facilitate the identification of the Colombian species with gamotepal flowers. The only species with free tepals included is Begonia killipiana (1946: 18), because to their resemblance and possible relationship with some Semibegoniella species like Begonia oliveri L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub. (1955: 113). In fact, Smith and Shubert (1946) have stated that the transition between Casparya and Semibegoniella is through B. killipiana and Doorenbos, Sosef, & De Wilde (1998) include this in Semibegoniella.
1. Free tepals in the staminate and pistillate flowers. Inflorescence with several bracts ..................................................... B. killipiana View in CoL
- Tepals with some grade of fusion. Inflorescence usually with 2–4 bracts (more than 4 only in B. oliveri View in CoL )......................................2
2. One series of tepals in the pistillate perianth......................................................................................................................................3
- Two series of petals in the pistillate perianth (the smaller one about equaling the styles length)......................................................4
3. Inflorescence with few bracts. 6 stamens ............................................................................................................................... B. libera View in CoL
- Inflorescence with many distichous imbricate bracts. 4 stamens.......................................................................................... B. oliveri View in CoL
4. Leaves bullates. Perianth of the staminate and pistillate flowers almost completely fussed ............................................................... ............................................................................................... B. lehmannii (Irmsch. 1949: 630) L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub. (1955: 113) View in CoL
- leaves not bullates. Perianth of the staminate and pistillate flowers partially connates, or only fussed at the base..........................5
5. 6 stamens............................................................................................................................................................................................6
- 4 stamens............................................................................................................................................................................................7
6. Leaves with margin serrate-lobulate; 1–2.3 cm long ...................................................................... B. hexandra Irmsch. (1949: 625) View in CoL
- Leaves with margin bidentate to serrulate; 7.3–17.2 cm long....................................................................................... B. silverstonii
7. leaves lanceolates; above piloses.................................................................. Begonia irmscheri L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub. (1955: 112) View in CoL
- leaves elliptic, ovate or oblong; above pilose to strigulose................................................................................................................8
