Lavandula austroapennina N.G.Passal., Tundis, Upson View in CoL sp. nov. ( Fig. 2)

Type:— ITALY. Calabria: prov. di Cosenza Massiccio del Pollino, ca. 8.5 Km NW of Morano, SW of Cozzi dell’Anticristo, 1330 m, 20 June 1997, Partecipanti VIII Iter Mediterraneum s.n. (holotype CLU No. 9888!, isotypes B!, MA!, PAL!, RNG!, W!).

Woody shrub 25–50 cm. Leaves linear, 4–6 × 0.3–0.5 cm, sometimes revolute, those in leaf axils smaller, with dense to sparse felt like indumentum of short branched hairs and sessile glands. Peduncles unbranched, erect, 10–20 cm. Verticillaster compact 2.5–4 cm, typically with a remote cyme. Bracts broadly ovate, apex acuminate, c. half as long as calyx. Bracteoles small, c. 1 mm, linear and scarious. Calyx tubular, 13-veined, 6–8 mm lobes short triangular, appendage small, rotund with broadly triangular apex, ca. 1 mm, dense felt-like indumentum of short branched hairs and sessile glands, green at base flushed violet. Corolla 12–15 mm long, upper lobes, 5–6 mm, 2–3 × the size of the lower lobes, shades of violet-purple.

Distribution and habitat:—Endemic to Southern Apennines, from north-western Calabria to south-western Lucania and in south-western Campania. Restricted to limestone occurring in open rocky habitats from 900 to 1750 m. The distribution range of the new species in accordance with the hypothesis of a Southern Apenninic phytogeographic area distinct from a Central Apenninic one ( Passalacqua 1998), where species with a similar distribution range, such as Leucanthemum laciniatum Huter, Porta & Rigo (1878: 617) , Cerastium granulatum ( Huter, Porta & Rigo 1878: 330) Porta (1879: 267) , Leucopoa calabrica ( Huter, Porta & Rigo 1878: 461) H.Scholz & Foggi (2005: 242) , and Ophrys pollinensis E.Nelson ex Devillers-Tersch. & Devillers (2000: 352) occur ( Peruzzi et al. 2014). This finding reduces the distribution range of L. angustifolia to southern French, west-southern Italian Alps and Tuscany.

Phenology:—Flowering and fruiting from June to August.

Etymology:—The specific epithet is informative of its restricted distribution to the Southern Apennines.
