Oxyligyrus zoilus ( Olivier, 1789)

( Figs. 57 – 62 View FIGURES 57 – 62 )

Scarabaeus zoilus Olivier, 1789: 45 View in CoL .

Oxyligyrus punctulatus Endrödi, 1966: 526 .

Description. Habitus as in Fig. 57 View FIGURES 57 – 62 . Length 24.0 mm (♂), 23.0–25.0 mm (♀). Width 15.0 mm (♂), 12.5–13.5 mm (♀). Color black to brown dark ( Fig. 57 View FIGURES 57 – 62 ). Head: Frons deeply concave; surface strongly rugose and punctate on apex; vertex nearly smooth, with sparse deep punctures. Frontoclypeal suture fine; with 2 transverse tubercles as a lateral curved carina each side. Eye canthus glabrous. Clypeus strongly rugose and grooved; triangular, apex strongly narrowed, acute and upturned. Interocular distance equals 3.0–3.2 times the transverse ocular diameter. Antennal subequal to antennomeres 2–7. Mandibles without teeth, curved to slightly bilobed. Pronotum: Surface with deep, minute to small punctures evenly dispersed, with a median transverse line completely smooth behind fovea. Apical tubercle small ( Fig. 58 View FIGURES 57 – 62 ). Subapical fovea deep (males) ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 57 – 62 ) to shallow (females), U shaped, rugose and deeply punctate. Scutellum: Nearly smooth, with 6–8 deep, minute, sparse punctures. Elytra: Surface with deep, large and ocellate punctures, some smaller between intervals; pairs of double rows not distinct; elytral suture present as a line of continues punctures. Pygidium: Surface strongly punctate, punctures small, deep, evenly dispersed, slightly denser on base and lateral angles. Surface strongly convex in males, nearly flat in females. Legs: Protibia tridentate; teeth subequally spaced. Male protarsus simple, not enlarged. Apex of metatibia crenulate; apical margin with 5 spinules. Apex of first metatarsomere slightly triangularly expanded. Venter: Prosternal process long, extending beyond procoxae; apex slightly convex, subquadrate, posterior third raised and flat, bordered by long yellow setae. Parameres: Base rounded and broad; lateral teeth long and prominent; apex strongly narrowed; apices slightly dilated ( Figs. 59–60 View FIGURES 57 – 62 ). Spiculum gastrale: Not examined.

Diagnosis. This species is similar to O. cayennensis but can be differentiated by having a deep concavity on the frons, male protarsus simple, protibia tridentate, and pronotal apical tubercle smaller. Additionally, the shape of the parameres is distinctively different between both species.
