Genus Bannatettix Zheng, 1993 View in CoL

Bannatettix Zheng, 1993a: 46 View in CoL ; Zheng, 1993b: 80; Jiang and Zheng, 1998: 360; Liang and Zheng, 1998: 222; Zheng, 2005: 426; Deng et al., 2007: 382.

Type species: Bannatettix longicornia Zheng, 1993 .

Body size medium or small, slender. Head projecting over dorsal level of pronotum. Vertex generally as broad as or narrower than width of one eye. In lateral view, vertex not visible, frontal ridge archly protruding between antennae. Antennae filiform, inserted below lower margins of eyes. Eyes globular, projecting over dorsal level of pronotum. Lateral ocelli placed slightly below lower margins of eyes. Disc of pronotum flat, anterior margin of pronotum straight, middle keel of pronotum distinct, pronotal process reaching or extending beyond top of hind femora. Posterior margins of lateral lobes of pronotum with two concavities, posterior angles of lateral lobes of pronotum turned downwards, generally round at apex. Tegmina elongated, rounded at apex. Wings developed, reaching or surpassing top of hind process. Dorsal and ventral margins of fore and middle femur straight or lower margins of middle femur undulated, width of middle femur equal to or narrower than width of tegmina, middle tibia not constricted at apex, outer side of hind femur without projecting node.

Bannatettix Zheng was placed into Tetriginae (Tetrigidae) based on filiform antenna, posterior angles of lateral lobes of pronotum turned downwards, generally round at apex. However, Bannatettix is distinguished from other Tetrigidae genera by its head projecting above upper level of pronotum, frontal ridge archly protruding between antennae, antennae inserted below lower margins of eyes, and middle tibia not constricted at apex. Bannatettix is closely related to Euparatettix Hancock and Ergatettix Kirby. It differs from the former by: frontal costa arcuately produced between antennae, antennae inserted just below lower margins of eyes, lateral ocelli placed near lower third or lower margins of eyes; and from the latter by: middle tibia not constricted at apex, outer side of hind femur without projecting node.

Species of the genus Bannatettix Zheng are typically inhabitants of moist places in tropical rainforests, such as moist stony ground, fallen leaves, shrubbery. They feed on mosses and other forms of humus, and they generally overwinter as adults.

Key to the species of Bannatettix Zheng View in CoL
