Diagnosis. Body small (TL 2.2–3.5 mm), narrow, covered with erect setae, elytra often yellowish-brown with blackish suture. Trigonium narrow, rectangular, with parallel sides and truncate apex, same length as parameroids; pala triangular, slightly shorter than parameroids; tegmen elongated, subrectangular in outline, with subparallel outer edges of parameres. Size, colouration, and setation make this species similar to A. montana . Both species are distinguishable on the basis of morphology of genitalia.
Redescription. Male. Body elongated, small (TL 2.4–3.5 mm), moderately convex. Body brown, legs and lower half of antenna yellowish brown. Punctation on head and pronotum granulate, strong and dense, punctures touching each other, punctation on elytra simple, dense, punctures separated by 0.5× diameter of a puncture. Body covered with yellowish setae, partly shorter and semi-erect, partly longer and protruding. Supraantennal ridges wellmarked, slightly elevated. Pronotum widest in anterior 1/3, sides curved, anterolateral angles distinctly produced, sharp and triangular, posterolateral angles obtuse. Elytra without carinae, humeri well-marked. Ventrite 5 rounded, apex slightly emarginated. Penis (L 0.74 mm, W 0.26 mm) elongate and narrow, trigonium very slender, rectangular, with parallel sides and truncate apex, same length as parameroids; parameroids elongated, sides of parameroids subparallel, with few punctures in apical part; pala triangular, slightly shorter than parameroids, basal edge concave. Tegmen (L 0.67 mm, W 0.35 mm) narrow, sides subparallel, parameres triangular at apices, with scarce punctures and delicate setae on the inner, membranous edges.
Female. Body small (TL 2.2–2.5 mm), macropterous. Supraantennal ridges well-marked, slightly elevated. Punctation becoming sparser in central and basal portion of pronotal disc, with shining interspaces, punctation on elytra denser, punctures separated by 0.3× diameter of a puncture.Ventrite 5 rounded, with semicircularly emarginated apex, tergite VII with elongated subtriangular sclerotization in apical portion. Lateral portions of ventrites 3 and 4 with small, oval setal patches. Bursal sclerite consisting of two small lateral rod-like sclerites (L 0.15 mm) widened in posterior portion and additional faintly visible central sclerite.
Measurements and ratios. Males (n = 4) TL 2.43–3.50 mm (3.11 mm), PL 0.43–0.67 mm (0.57 mm), PW 0.63–1.03 mm (0.90 mm), EL 1.93–2.93 mm (2.54 mm), EW 1.10–1.57 mm (1.41 mm), TL/EW 2.17–2.23 (2.21), PW/PL 1.46–1.72 (1.58), EL/EW 1.76–1.87 (1.80), EL/PL 4.15–4.89 (4.50), EW/PW 1.52–1.74 (1.59). Females (n = 10) TL 2.17–2.50 mm (2.37 mm), PL 0.37–0.43 mm (0.41 mm), PW 0.67–0.77 mm (0.72 mm), EL 1.80–2.00 mm (1.94 mm), EW 0.97–1.13 mm (1.05 mm), TL/EW 2.12–2.40 (2.26), PW/PL 1.62–1.92 (1.76), EL/EW 1.71–2.00 (1.86), EL/PL 4.38–5.00 (4.75), EW/PW 1.43–1.52 (1.45).
Distribution. The species was described from Mount Manaia on the Whangerei Heads peninsula. It is widely distributed in northern part of North Island, mostly in Northland and Auckland areas, sometimes also in Bay of Plenty and Coromandel ( Fig. 18B View FIGURE 18 ).
Remarks. Broun (1910) correctly noted that Atopida grahami is similar to A. hirta but differs in the sculpture of the thorax. What he did not realised is the fact that this difference was due to the sexual dimorphism, and A. grahami is in fact a female of A. hirta .
