(heteropògon). Estès per les zones tropicals i subtropicals de la Terra, ateny també la regió mediterrània. Creix en prats secs, matolls, codines i relleixos de roques, sobre substrats calcaris. És comú en molts pedregars orientats al sud i arrecerats, entre 400 i 800 metres (Comellas & Pérez, 1987: 42-43).
