sp. nov.

Menippus hsuehleeae , new species

( Figs 3, 4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 , 8 View FIGURES 7 – 8 , 13 View FIGURES 9 – 17 , 23 View FIGURES 18 – 25 , 30 View FIGURES 26 – 32 , 38 View FIGURES 33 – 41 , 43 View FIGURES 42 – 44 )

Male. Length 8.0– 8.5 mm. Color ( Figs 3–4 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ): yellowish-brown; antennae blackish brown except two basal antennomeres; vertex, apex of femur, apex and base of tibiae, and tarsi darkened; pronotum with one big black spot at each side. Sculpture: head and pronotum with large, extremely dense punctures, punctures on elytra relatively smaller. Antenna short, reaching mid-point of body, all antennomeres elongate, relative length of antennomeres II–XI about 1.0: 1.3: 1.8: 1.5: 1.4: 1.5: 1.5: 1.5: 1.5: 1.8. Pronotum widest at apical 1/3, gradually narrowed towards base; pronotal disc with a pair of circular depressions, with shallow depression medially, and transverse depression along hind margin laterally; hind margin slightly medially and laterally concave. Prosternal process reduced to a sharp keel between coxae ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7 – 8 ), parallel-sided from base to apex; procoxal cavities open, gap between apex of hypomeron and posternal process about 0.3X coxal cavity width. Elytra elongate, about 1.6X longer than wide, dorsally flat. Apex of last ventrite with a shallow concave excision. Penis slender and weakly curved in lateral view ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 9 – 17 a), in dorsal view narrow and slightly asymmetric, apex widely rounded ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 9 – 17 b). Apex of endophallic sclerite widely rounded, with scattered tiny teeth along outer apical margin ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 9 – 17 b).

Female. Length 9.6–10.5 mm. Similar to male. Apex of last ventrite weakly concave. Sternite VIII well sclerotized ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 18 – 25 ), apex moderately concave at middle, with scattered long setae along apical margin, spiculum short. Spermathecal receptaculum strongly swollen ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 26 – 32 ), pump and receptaculum well separated by one layer of membrane, pump narrow and curved, spermathecal duct deeply projecting into receptaculum. Gonocoxae ( Fig. 38 View FIGURES 33 – 41 ) separated, cylindrical, apex with three long setae.

Diagnosis. This new species is similar to Menippus issikii (Chûjô) with two black spots at sides of the pronotum, but differs with the black spots larger in size and not constricted at basal 1/3 of lateral margin of pronotum ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ) (black spots smaller and constricted at apical 1/3 of lateral margin of pronotum in M. issikii ); the rounded and asymmetric apex of penis ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 9 – 17 b) (apex of penis mucronate and symmetric in M. issikii ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 9 – 17 b)); and the broadly rounded apex of endophallic sclerite ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 9 – 17 b) (endophallic sclerite elongate in M. issikii ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 9 – 17 b)).
