Key to male Medetera View in CoL of Sri Lanka

The key is mainly based on Bickel (1987) including only species from Sri Lanka and enhanced with the newly described species.

1 Mesonotum bright metallic green or blue violet; fore tarsomere 2 and 3 of male flattened ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ); male hind tibia with apical tooth; dorsal surstylar arm prolonged, ventral arm reduced or lost.............................................. 2

- Mesonotum dark metallic green or black; fore tarsomeres normal; male hind tibia usually without apical tooth; dorsal and ven- tral surstylar arm subequal............................................................................. 4

2 Thoracic setae yellow; dorsal surstylar arm greatly expanded and rounded apically ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 A, 2)........ peradeniya sp. nov.

- Thoracic setae black; dorsal surstylar arm parallel-sided (e.g., Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 )........................................... 3

3 First flagellomere yellowish; vein M subparallel with R4+5 before wing margin; lower calypter with yellowish setae; surstylus with 2 normal setae ventrally; ventral arm of cercus with normal setae (see Bickel 1987, figs. 3a, b)... platychira View in CoL de Meijere

- First flagellomere black; vein M distinctly converging towards R4+5 to wing margin; lower calypter with black setae; surstylus with 1 normal and 1 curved flattened seta ventrally; ventral arm of cercus with 3–4 long sinuate setae ( Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 3).............................................................................................. kandyensis sp. nov.

4 4–6 strong dorsocentral setae present, anterior setae decreasing in size............................................ 5

- Only 2 strong dorsocentral setae present, anterior setae hair-like; hypopygium ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ).............. colombensis sp. nov.

5 5–6 strong dorsocentrals present; hypopygium ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 )......................................... nuwarensis sp. nov.

- 4 strong dorsocentrals present, anterior 2 setae sometimes smaller.............................................. 6

6 Male hind basitarsus with distinct basal anteroventral tooth; hypopygium pyriform; epandrial seta absent ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 )........ 7

- Male hind basitarsus without tooth; hypopygium subrectangular; epandrial seta present (see Bickel 1987, fig. 17h)....... 8

7 Thorax with 3 bronze vittae; 4 strong dorsocentrals, decreasing in size anteriorly; epandrial lobes each with an apically hairy seta; ventral surstylar lobe with 1 strong apical seta; apical blade-like seta on cercus with serrate external margin (see Bickel 1987, fig. 18b)...................................................................... grisescens View in CoL de Meijere

- Thorax without vittae; anterior 2 dorsocentrals distinctly shorter than posterior 2 bordering mesonotal depression; epandrial lobes with an apically hairy and an apically flattened seta; apical blade-like seta on cercus with smooth external margin ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 )................................................................................... subgrisescens sp. nov.

8 Thoracic setae yellow; fore and mid coxae with silvery pruinosity (see Bickel 1987, Fig. 17h).......... pumila de Meijere

- Thoracic setae black; coxae without silvery pruinosity....................................................... 9

9 Surstylus expanded dorsally; cercus with curled pedunculate seta (see Bickel 1987, fig. 16d)............. chandleri Bickel

- Surstylus parallel-sided; cercus without curled pedunculate seta (see Bickel 1987, fig. 16e).......... austroapicalis Bickel
