Parallygus guttatus Matsumura View in CoL (original comb. reinstated)

Figs 1 View FIGURE 1 A,E, 5A–I.

Parallygus guttatus Matsumura 1914: 205 View in CoL . Phlepsius guttatus, Metcalf, 1957: 558 View in CoL .

Coloration as in P. divaricatus View in CoL but paler, lacking facial spots and costal stripe on forewings.

Male genitalia: Pygofer triangularly produced caudally with dorsal marginal mesal plate-like lobe as in P. divaricatus ; macrosetae in caudal half and along dorsal margin at midlength area. Subgenital plates rounded with even lateral margins, anterior extension directed dorsally. Style with rounded distal margin. Connective V-shaped, dorsally directed. Aedeagus with dorsal apodeme poorly developed, base stout with one pair of filamentous unpigmented sinuate processes at base of short tubular shaft, twice as long as shaft and one pair of blade-like caudally narrowed ventral processes almost three times as long as shaft. Gonopore apical.

Female genitalia. Hind margin of seventh sternite about 3 times as long as sixth, with posterior margin medially slightly emarginate.

Measurements. Male 5.8 mm long, 1.6 mm wide across eyes and 1.7 mm wide across hind margin of pronotum. Female 6.2 long, 1.7 mm wide across eyes and 1.9 mm wide across hind margin of pronotum.

Material examined. INDIA: 1 3, Maharashtra: Matheran, 915 m, 22.xi.1977, C.A. Viraktamath ( BMNH); 1 3, Kerala: Nelliampathy, 10.v.2011, N. Remarks. This species was described from Taiwan by Matsumura (1914), based on four female specimens that are deposited in Hokkaido University, Japan. Later, Metcalf (1957) transferred Parallygus guttatus Matsumura to the genus Phlepsius without explanation. Photos of type specimen of P. guttatus with label data “ Taiwan, Shirin, 31 July 1906, Nitobe I., Parallygus guttatus det. Matsumura”, are available on the website of the National Digital Archives Program/ National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) (2011).

The identity of the male genitalia of this species is tentative as it is based on specimens from mainland China and India. This somewhat wide distribution ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ) together with the similarity of these specimens to the original description and photos of P. guttatus , suggests that they are conspecific with the specimens ( P. guttatus ) from Taiwan.

This species is closely related to P. divaricatus differing only in having a straight ventral process ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 F) of the aedeagus compared to distally strongly curved ventral process in the latter ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 F).
