Canthecona humeralis
status

humeralis (Canthecona) Distant 1908: 452. [ Fig. 83 View FIGURES 81–88 ]

Original data: “ ♁”; “ Hab. Tenasserim; Mergui ( Coll. Dist. ).” [syntype (s)]

SYNTYPE ♀: blue-margined syntype disc; red-margined type [H. T.] disc; “Tenasserim Mergui”; “ Canthecona humeralis type Dist. [Distant’s handwriting]”; “Distant Coll. 1911–383.”; “NHMUK 010592154”. Left hemelytron and right anterior leg missing, abdomen and scutellum disjointed from pronotum ( Fig. 83 View FIGURES 81–88 ).

Current status: Cantheconidea humeralis ( Distant, 1908) (see Schouteden 1907: 44 and Thomas 1994: 151, 168–169 but see also Distant 1908: 451–452).

Notes: Distant did not state the number of his specimens, only the sex: male. Thomas (1994: 168) mentioned “Type specimens in BMNH”. We have found only one specimen in the collection, a female which we consider a syntype as it has the correct type data. The discrepancy as to the seX of the syntype found (♀) and the seX stated in the original description (♁) certainly points to a typographical error in the original description (either the wrong sex symbol was used or Distant had both male and female, both sex symbols were intended but only one was set and printed, and a male specimen has gone missing) or to the fact that Distant may have been confused by the presence of a dirt particle on the posterior margins of segment X and laterotergites IX, if that dirt particle was already present then. Indeed, Liu & Cai (2022) established that Distant had, on another occasion, been fooled by ochraceous markings, which turned out to be dirt.
