18046 COL, US) or white (E. Forero & J. Garzón 349 COL); standard broadly elliptic, 4.0–5.0 × 3.0 cm, cordate at base, rounded to retuse at apex, claw 4.0 mm long; wings oblong-elliptic, 7.0–11 × 2.0 cm, attenuate at base, round to acute at apex, the claw 8.0 mm long; keel petals oblong-elliptic, 7.0–11 × 2.0 cm, attenuate at base, acute at apex, the claw 8.0 mm long; pubescent at base of wing and keel petals. Stamen filaments 8.0– 10.4 cm long, glabrous. Style 8.0– 11 cm long, sericeous, except at apex; ovary 10–14 mm long, sericeous; stigma peltate, villous. Fruits 27–30 × 4.5 cm, slightly ornamented by transverse lamellae, covered with dense hairs, acute to acuminate at base, acute at apex, lignified wings along fruit margin, up to 7-seeded. Seeds globose, 2.5–3.0 × 2.5–3.0; hilum circling 75–85% of the seed circumference, 5 mm high.

Taxonomic notes:— Mucuna cuatrecasasii is morphologically similar to M. klitgaardiae , but it differs by the presence of adpressed hairs on the abaxial surface of leaflets, the peduncle 30–120 cm long, and the fruits slightly ornamented by lamellae in M. cuatrecasasii (vs. erect hairs on the abaxial surface of the leaflets, the peduncle 20–40 cm long, and the fruits not ornamented by lamellae in M. klitgaardiae ). Mucuna cuatrecasasii is endemic to Colombia, whilst M. klitgaardiae is restricted to Ecuador and Peru. Mucuna cuatrecasasii also resembles to M. cajamarca (see comments under that species).

Phenology:— Flowering throughout the year; fruiting March to November.

Distribution and habitat:— Mucuna cuatrecasasii is endemic to Colombia, in the Boyacá, Cundinamarca and Santander Districts ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ). It grows in wet forest (D. Stancik 1146 COL) alt, 200–2500 m.

Conservation status:— Following the IUCN (2016) criteria, M. cuatrecasasii is assessed as being of Least Concern (LC). Although our data indicate that M. cuatrecasasii has a restricted extent of occurrence (3128.87 km 2, EN) and area of occupancy (52 km 2, EN), there is no evidence that the species habitat is severely fragmented. Furthremore, the species has been collected from more than ten different localities.

Vernacular name: — ‘ Ojo de buey’ (L.K. Ruiz, personal communication).
