Nomenclature. Incorrect subsequent spelling of generic name as “ Litononus ” in Tirjaková (1992a), and therefore unavailable according to the Articles 33.3 and 33.5 of the ICZN (1999). Litonotus fasciola was erroneously ascribed to Ehrenberg and Wrześniowski by Matis (1988), Matis & Straková-Striešková (1991), Matis & Tirjaková (1992), Tirjaková (1992b) and Tirjaková & Matis (1987).
Main morphological characters (according to Song & Wilbert 1989). Length 80–140 µm in vivo. Body lanceolate with narrowly rounded posterior body end. Two macronuclear nodules with a single micronucleus in between. Contractile vacuole distinctly subterminal. Extrusomes rod-like, about 5 µm long, attached along whole length of oral bulge, scattered in cytoplasm and sometimes forming bundles in posterior body end. Somatic ciliary pattern Litonotus -like; 6–8 right and about 5 left kineties.
Distribution. Litonotus fasciola was recorded in soil from a spruce forest near Javorina in the Tatra National Park ( Rosa 1957); in submerged and wet mosses from Slovenský Raj at a frequency of 5.66 and 4.54, respectively ( Tirjaková & Matis 1987); in organic mud from activated sludge plants in Bratislava ( Matis 1988); in the Teplý potok brook and thermal lakes in the Bojnice Spa at 9.5–38 °C and pH 6.0–7.2 ( Matis & Straková-Striešková 1991); in the backwaters of the Danube River in Čičov ( Matis & Tirjaková 1992); in a Sphagnum pond near Rojkov in the Veľká Fatra Mts ( Tirjaková 1992b); in a channel passing across the castle’s park in Rusovce near the town of Bratislava ( Tirjaková 1992a); in the periphyton and benthos of the Turiec River ( Tirjaková 1993); in the main stream and tributaries of the Morava River as well as in ponds and small lakes of the Morava inundation zone ( Matis & Tirjaková 1994); in the benthos of the Karlova Ves (Bratislava) Branch of the Danube River ( Szentivány & Tirjaková 1994); in a groundwater vein in the Vtáčnik Mountain Range ( Krno et al. 1995); in mosses from the town of Bratislava ( Chrenková & Tirjaková 2000); in the benthos from the Gidra River ( Tirjaková 2003a).
