Main morphological characters (according to Blatterer & Foissner 1988). Size 70–120 × 15–25 µm in vivo. Body lanceolate with narrowly to broadly rounded posterior body end. Two macronuclear nodules with a single micronucleus in between. Contractile vacuole subterminal. Extrusomes rod-like and slightly curved, about 6–7 µm long, attached along whole length of oral bulge, to posterior body end and to dorsal side forming small bundles. Somatic ciliary pattern Litonotus -like; invariably 3 right and 3–4 left kineties.

Distribution. Litonotus muscorum was recorded in the bark and decaying wood mass of various coniferous and deciduous trees from many localities in Western and Central Slovakia ( Bartošová & Tirjaková 2005, 2008; Tirjaková & Bartošová 2004; Vďačný et al. 2007).
