Nomenclature. Misspelled as “ A. plerosigma ” by Novikmec et al. (2007), and thus unavailable according to the Articles 33.3 and 33.5 of the ICZN (1999). Misdated as “Stokes, 1984” by Szentivány & Tirjaková (1994).

Main morphological characters (according to Foissner et al. 1995). Size 150–450 × 40–60 µm in vivo. Body broadly fusiform and usually sigmoidal. Two macronuclear nodules with a single micronucleus in between. Several contractile vacuoles forming a ventral and a dorsal row. Extrusomes acicular, 10–15 × 1–1.2 µm in size, scattered in cytoplasm and forming an anterior cluster in oral bulge. Somatic ciliary pattern Amphileptus -like; about 25–35 right and 4–6 left kineties.

Distribution. Amphileptus pleurosigma was reported from the riverside zone of the Danube near the State Natural Reservation Čičov ( Tirjaková 1992a); from the benthos of the Karlova Ves (Bratislava) Branch of the Danube River ( Szentivány & Tirjaková 1994); from the littoral zone of the Danube River near the hydroelectric power structures in Gabčíkovo ( Matis & Tirjaková 1995); from the gravel of the spring area below the Veľký Javorník, Malé Karpaty Mts ( Tirjaková 1997a, Tirjaková & Stloukal 2004); from the benthos of the Hron River and its tributary, Kremnický potok stream ( Tirjaková 1998); from the pelagial of the Morava River near Devín ( Baláži & Matis 2002a, 2002b); from benthos of the Zbojský potok stream in the Poloniny National Park ( Novikmec et al. 2007); from periphyton and submerged vegetation of the Danube River in Hrušov ( Baláži 2010); from sediment in the littoral zone of the upper Váh River near the village of Stankovany ( Tirjaková & Vďačný 2013a).
