Trypanidius dimidiatus Thomson, 1860: 8 ; Monné, 2005: 145; Monné et al., 2010: 245 (distribution). Trepanideus posticus Heyne & Taschenberg, 1907: 243 , pl. 37, fig. 37 (sic).

Male. Dark brown to black integument. Body covered with yellowish-brown to grayish-brown pubescence, except some regions that are covered with a yellowish pubescence, including the head, pronotum, spots on sides of prothorax, spots on apical third and band at apical margin of femora, a transverse band at base of tibiae, tarsi, center basal region of scutellum, apical fourth of elytra, lateral spots on posterior region of metasternum, and lateral spots on urosternites; whitish-yellow pubescence occurs in a band at base of antennomeres 3–11 (extending up to one third of their length), in random spots on pronotal disc and in median transversal band on tibiae; whitish pubescence in longitudinal band from elytral base toward middle of crest, in transverse band interrupted on median region of elytra (variable number of spots), in transverse band at beginning of apical third of elytra; dark brown pubescence in six spots on pronotum (two on anterior region and four on posterior margin), on margin of scutellum, in spot between the suture and the elytral crest, in central spot at the beginning of the posterior half of the elytra and in tufts distributed in rows in the elytral carinae; silvery pubescence covering the elytral carinae between the tufts of pubescence, almost all of ventral surface and the basal half of the femora.

Variation. Yellowish pubescence in spots on sides of prothorax, in apical third and apical margin of femora, in transverse band at base of tibiae (which can be whitish-yellow or absent); irregularly spaced spots of whitishyellow pubescence on pronotal disc can be absent.

Body covered with coarse, short white setae, contrasting with rest of pubescence.

Frons flat, lower eye lobes as long as genae with two erect setae on inner margin. Antennae with scape 1.2 times longer than antennomere 3.

Prothorax about 2 times wider than long; pronotal disc with two ridges elevated converging above and a postmedian elevation between them. Scutellum with slightly truncate apex. Prosternal process three times narrower than procoxal cavity; posterior margin of prosternum about three times wider than prosternal process; mesosternal process with a longitudinal carina to a central tumescence and as wide as mesocoxal cavity.

Elytra 3.7 times longer than prothorax; centro-basal crest near suture and longitudinal carinae distinct; humeri strongly projected anteriorly; apex truncate to obliquely truncate with external angles projected or not.

Measurements (mm). (Male/Female). Total length: 15.3/18.1; prothorax length: 2.7/3.2; prothorax width: 4.8/ 5.8; elytral length: 11.5/13.2; humeral width: 6.3/7.8.

Type locality. Brazil (MNHN).

Geographical distribution. Brazil (Espírito Santo to Rio Grande do Sul), Argentina (Misiones). This species is newly reported from Brazil (Bahia and Minas Gerais) and Paraguay (Guairá).

Hosts. Leguminosae— Chamaecrista hispidula (Vahl) H.S.Irwin & Barneby ; Salicaceae— Salix sp. (Monné, 2001).

Comments. In addition to the characters mentioned in the key, Trypanidius dimidiatus differs from congeners by the mesosternal process with a longitudinal carina leading up to a central tumescence and by the elytral pubescence with a whitish longitudinal band from the base up to half of the crest, a whitish transverse band interrupted in the median region (number of spots variable) and silvery pubescence covering the elytral carinae.
