Asianthrips sulawesiensis View in CoL sp. n.

( Figs 25 View FIGURES 23–28 , 137–144 View FIGURES 137–144 )

Female macroptera. Body brown ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 23–28 ). Antennal segment III yellow; remaining segments uniformly brown, but segment IV very slightly yellowish at base. All femora brown, Fore femora yellowish at apical 1/3, mid and hind femora yellowish at apical 1/5–1/4; all tibiae and tarsi yellow. Fore wings and prominent body setae almost colourless. Head ( Fig. 137 View FIGURES 137–144 ) a little longer than wide, 1.07 times as long as wide; dorsal surface sculptured with transverse reticulation, but the reticles very weak or almost smooth between eyes. Cheeks weakly incut behind eyes, weakly rounded, weakly narrowed to base. Postocular setae shorter than eyes. Postocellar setae weakly developed, shorter than a diameter of posterior ocellus. Eyes well developed, 0.41–0.42 times as long as head. Antennal segments VII and VIII somewhat broadly fused, but VIII not constricted basally, cone-shaped ( Fig. 138 View FIGURES 137–144 ); segment III with three sense cones. The right maxillary stylet almost reaching postocular setae, but the left one not reaching at least in holotype, rather wide apart, wider than 1/3 of the head width apart at the basal collar of head. Pronotum 0.58 times as long as head and 1.93 times as wide as long; pa about 1/2 the median pronotal length. Metanotum ( Fig. 139 View FIGURES 137–144 ) weakly polygonally reticulated, but the reticles very weak at anterior portion. Prospinasternum largely developed. Mesopresternum and mesoeusternum ( Fig. 140 View FIGURES 137–144 ) narrowly fused medially, with long sutures between them at both sides; mesopresternum eroded medially. Fore tarsi unarmed. Fore wings with 5–6 duplicated cilia. Tergites not small ( Fig. 143 View FIGURES 137–144 ), tergites III–V much wider than pronotum. S1 setae on tergite IX a little shorter than S2, about 0.7 times as long as tube, they are weakly expanded at apex. Tube ( Fig. 144 View FIGURES 137–144 ) about 0.54 times as long as head. Anal setae almost as long as tube.

Measurements. Female holotype (mac.) in microns. Distended body length about 1800. Head length 172, width across cheeks 161. Compound eye dorsal length 70–73. Pronotum length 100, width 193. Fore wing length about about 690. Tube length 93, width across base 53. Antenna length 366, segments III–VIII length (width) as follows: 58 (28), 58 (28), 50 (25), 45 (22), 42 (20), 26 (12). Postocular setae about 50. Pronotal aa?, am?, ml?, pa about 50, epim about 60. S1 setae on tergite IX 65–67, S2 setae on tergite IX 70–72. Anal setae 90–92.

Male macroptera. Colour and structure very similar to macropterous female, but smaller and slenderer. Head almost as long as wide. Fore tarsi unarmed. Fore wings with 5–5 duplicated cilia. Suture between mesopresternum and mesoeusternum nearly complete. S2 setae on tergite IX short and pointed. Tube 0.56 times as long as head.

Measurements. Male paratype (mac.) in microns. Distended body length 1370. Head length 143, width across cheeks 143. Compound eye dorsal length 58–60. Pronotum length 80, width 178. Fore wing length about 560. Tube length 80, width across base 42. Antenna length about 330, segments III–VIII length (width) as follows: 50 (24), 53 (25), 45 (22), 43 (21), 36 (20), 24 (12). Postocular setae 56–57. Pronotal aa 35–40, am 33–34, ml 42–45, pa 40–42, epim 52–52. S1 setae on tergite IX 60–62, S2 setae on tergite IX 29–30. Anal setae 78–80.

Type series. Holotype female (mac.): Indonesia, South Sulawesi (= Celebes), Karaenta Forest Res., Maros to Camba , alt. about 400m, on dead Palmae , 6.viii.1984 (SO) . Paratype: Indonesia, 1 male (mac.), collected with holotype .

Remarks. A. sulawesiensis is very similar to A. magnus in having the head with weak sculpture between the compound eyes, and a narrowly fused mesopresternum and mesoeusternum. It can be distinguished from A. magnus by the key above.
