Asianthrips pallens View in CoL sp. n.

( Figs 19–20 View FIGURES 11–22 , 109–116 View FIGURES 109–116 )

Female macroptera. Body largely yellow ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 11–22 ). Mesothorax and pleural regions of metathorax shaded with pale brown. Tube brown with base yellowish. Abdominal tergites III to VI each with a median pale brown marking just behind antecostal suture. Antennal segments I and II brownish yellow, segment III yellow, the remaining segments brown. Fore wings and prominent body setae almost colourless. Head ( Fig. 109 View FIGURES 109–116 ) almost as long as wide, 1.03 times as long as wide; dorsal surface sculptured with transverse reticulation, but the reticles weak between eyes. Cheeks weakly incut behind eyes, weakly rounded, narrowed to base. Eyes about 0.4 times as long as head. Postocellar setae shorter than a diameter of posterior ocellus. Postocular setae shorter than eyes. Antennal segments VII and VIII broadly fused, segment VIII not constricted at base ( Fig. 112 View FIGURES 109–116 ); segment III with three sense cones. Maxillary stylets rather short and V-shaped, retracted into 1/3 of head capsule; maxillary bridge very weak. Mouth cone short and rounded. Pronotum ( Fig. 109 View FIGURES 109–116 ) about 0.6 times as long as head and 1.81 times as wide as long; five pairs of prominent setae well developed, but they were not able to measure correctly in holotype. Basantra largely developed. Prospinasternum largely developed. Mesopresternum and mesoeusternum ( Fig. 113 View FIGURES 109–116 ) widely fused medially, with vestigial short sutures between them at both sides. Fore tarsi unarmed. Fore wings with 4–5 duplicated cilia in holotype. Pelta weak, bell-shaped. Tergites not small, tergites II to VI wider than pronotum. S1 and S2 setae on tergite IX very weakly expanded at apex, S1 shorter than S2. Tube ( Fig. 116 View FIGURES 109–116 ) about 0.5 times as long as head. Anal setae longer than tube.

Measurements. Female holotype (mac.) in microns. Distended body length about 1500. Head length 152, width across cheeks 147. Compound eye dorsal length 60–62. Pronotum length 91, width 165. Fore wing length about 560. Tube length 75, width across base 46. Antenna length about 300, segments III–VIII length (width) as follows: 43 (25), 47 (26), 41 (22), 38 (20), 37 (18), 27 (15). Postocular setae?40. Pronotal aa?, am?, ml?, pa about 40, epim about 40. S1 setae on tergite IX about 50, S2 setae on tergite IX 53–56. Anal setae 85–90.

Female microptera. Colour very similar to macropterous female, but mesothorax and pleural regions of metathorax somewhat paler. Head ( Fig. 110 View FIGURES 109–116 ) 1.02 times as long as wide. Eyes small, 0.32–0.34 times as long as head. Ocelli absent. Metanotum wider than long. Tergites without sigmoid wing retaining setae. S1 and S2 setae on tergite IX subequal in length. Tube 0.59 times as long as head.

Measurements. Female paratype (mic.) in microns. Distended body length 1460. Head length 140, width across cheeks 137. Compound eye dorsal length 47–48. Pronotum length 95, width 172. Fore wing length 95. Tube length 82, width across base 49. Antenna length 315, segments III–VIII length (width) as follows: 42 (27), 46 (27), 43 (22), 40 (22), 37 (20), 26 (15). Postocular setae 45–47. Pronotal aa about 30, am 35–36, ml 40–43, pa 43–45, epim 40–43. S1 setae on tergite IX 57–58, S2 setae on tergite IX 56–58. Anal setae?90.

Male microptera. Colour and structure very similar to micropterous female ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 11–22 ). The unique paratype micropterous male is mounted twistingly, and some body parts were not able to measure correctly. Body smaller and slender. Fore tarsal tooth absent.

Measurements. Male paratype (mic.) in microns. Distended body length about 1050. Head length 125, width across cheeks?. Compound eye dorsal length 42–43. Pronotum length 79, width?. Fore wing length 66. Tube length?, width across base 40. Antenna length 265, segments III–VIII length (width) as follows: 37 (24), 38 (24), 35 (22), 34 (20), 32 (19), 25 (14). Postocular setae?40. Pronotal aa?30, am about 30, ml 35, pa 37, epim 35. S1 setae on tergite IX?45, S2 setae on tergite IX 25. Anal setae 72–73.

Type series. Holotype female (mac.): Taiwan, Kaohsiung-hsien , Liukuei, on dead leaves and branches, 4.ix.1993 (TN) . Paratypes: Taiwan, 1 female (mic.) and 1 male (mic.), collected with holotype .

Remarks. A. pallens is somewhat similar to A. nobil is from Indonesia and A. sufflavus from Thailand in largely yellow body. From A. nobilis , it can be distinguished by the shorter maxillary stylets that retracted into basal 1/3 of head, and almost entirely yellow pterothorax and abdominal tergite II. From A. sufflavus , it can be distinguished by the fewer setae on dorsum of distal antennal segments, and almost entirely yellow head.
