Erect herbs, aromatic, 1–2 m high, stems glabrous to variously pubescent, with some glandular hairs. Leaves with petiole, 1–2.5(–5.2) cm long, blade ovate or rhombic-ovate, 2.5–8 × 1.5–5 cm, acute or acuminate apex, truncate or attenuate base, serrate or crenate margin, adaxial surface sub-glabrous, slightly hairy, with scattered hairs and some glandular hairs, abaxial surface sub-glabrous to villous. Flowers grouped in 15 flowered cymes, peduncle short, 2–5 mm long, surround by an involucre of numerous bracteoles, 3.5–4 mm long, appressed and stiff, acuminate. Cymes arranged in elongated panicles, with ascending branches. Calyx 2–8 mm long, fine hair pubescence with some glandular hairs; teeth subulate, 0.5–1.5 mm, stiff. Corolla white or pale blue or blue color, 5–6 mm long. Stigma 7 mm long. Nutlets ellipsoid 1.5 mm, smooth, dark brown.
Distribution and habitat:— Cantinoa mutabilis is a common and widespread species with a large morphological variation evidenced along its wide distribution range. It grows from the southern United States of America to Argentina.
