Aromatic sub-shrub, 1–1.8 m high, densely woolly pubescence, with dendroid hairs on stems and leaves. Leaves with petiole, 1–2.5 cm long, blade ovate, 3.5–8 × 3–7 cm, acute or obtuse apex, cordate, truncate or round base, irregularly serrate margin, both surfaces densely woolly pubescent with dendroid hairs. Flowers grouped in 20 flowered cymes, surround by an involucre of numerous bracteoles, 2.5–5 mm long, exterior woolly, interior glabrous. Cymes arranged in branched panicles, 5–15 cm long. Calyx 2–5.5 mm long, teeth ca. 0.5 mm or partly or entirely obsolete, densely woolly with dispersed sessile glands. Corolla white or pale blue or blue color, 4–5 mm long. Stigma 7 mm long. Nutlets ellipsoid 2–2.5 × 0.6 mm, apiculate, smooth, chestnut color.
Remarks:— Cantinoa althaeifolia is characterized by the presence of dendroid hairs and the leaf morphology. The density of inflorescences and density of pubescence is variable in C. althaeifolia .
Distribution and habitat:— This species grows in Paraguay, northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil.
