Annual herb, prostrate at the base, up to 1 m high, glandular pubescence or simple hairs. Leaves with a petiole 1–3 cm long, ovate blade, 1.5–6.5 × 0.5–3 cm, serrate, crenate margin, acute apex, cuneate base, somewhat cordate, pilose pubescence on both surfaces. Sub-globose cymes, 0.5–1.7 cm wide, sessile or with a short peduncle, bracteoles long, narrow elliptic, 10 mm long. Calyx 3–5 mm long, up to 8 mm long in fruit. Corolla tube lilac, 5–7 mm long. Nutlets 1.5 mm long.
Remarks:—Type material of Vahl’s taxa is housed at Herb. C ( Stafleu & Cowan 1986). A specimen with Vahl’s handwriting: “HB. VAHLII. Clinopodium chamaedrys pedunculatum (crossed over)” is here selected as a suitable lectotype.
Distribution and habitat:— Marsypianthes chamaedrys is widely distributed from Central and South America to the NE of Argentina, in the provinces of Misiones and Corrientes. It inhabits shady, swampy, sandy or rocky, scrub and grassland on the edge of a river or stream environments.
Selected specimens examined:— ARGENTINA. Corrientes. Ituzaingó, Isla Apipé Chico, 29 September 1978, Schinini 15420 (CTES!). Misiones: San Pedro, Saltos de Moconá, 10 April 1979, Zuloaga et al. 713 (SI!).
