Dinotoperla thwaitesi Kimmins View in CoL

( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 A–D)

Larva. Remarks. Kimmins (1951) described the adult male. The species was later synonymised with D.

serricauda View in CoL by McLellan (1971). Yule (1984) reinstated D. thwaitesi View in CoL and stated that Kimmins’ (1951) female described under D. fontana View in CoL was actually D. thwaitesi View in CoL . Yule (1984) mentions the habitat for the larvae but does not describe the larvae. The association with adults for D. thwaitesi View in CoL has been confirmed using genetic methods.

Length: 5.5–6.2 mm.

Colour: Dark brown with paler legs and wingpads.

Body: Robust.

Head: Dark mottling in posterior area of head; dorsal surface covered with short robust setae; a single very long robust setule present between ocelli and scape, and medially near eye. Antennae longer than body; robust, tapering slightly near the tips.

Thorax: Pronotum quadrate, width greater than length; dark mottling in medial area. Meso- and meta-nota with raised pale bosses at base of wingpads, extending into a darker sunken area; highest point of bosses with distinct patch of robust setae. Dorsal surface of all thoracic segments with long robust setae that taper to a point, hind margins with similar setae. Hind margin of metanotum with a pair of single very long robust setae either side of medial suture; anterior margin of pronotum with similar single setae present.

Legs: Outer margin of femora with scattered long fine setae, and peg-like setae in distal area; outer margin of tibiae with fringe of long fine setae; inner margin of tibiae with long robust setae present; outer surface of femora and tibiae with long robust setae tapering to a point. Distal margin with robust bladed setae present. Femora outer surface dark with pale medial spot (dark stripe near outer and inner margin may be present); tibiae with thin band in proximal area and dark stripe near inner margin. Inner surface of femora with broad dark stripes that are approx. half the length of segment.

Abdomen: Tergites with robust setae that taper to a point on surface and hind margin, setae on hind margin may have curled end which looks similar to sickle-shaped setae. Tergite X with similar setae to other tergites; hind margin raised and produced to a rounded point. Gills light, orange. Cerci shorter than abdomen; segments elongating into very long and thin segments, elongating by segment 9; long setae present until segment 13. Paraprocts broad, length subequal to basal width.
