Male. Integument from black to brownish-red. Segments III–XII bicolor: yellow or orange, with apex from dark brown to black. Scutellum from light brown to dark brown, with or without black margins. Elytra dark brown, with three pairs of irregular yellow bands; one pair at base, in humeral region that extends from scutellum to near outer elytral edge; the second, antemedian, transverse, which does not reach elytral suture and is wider in the outer margin and reaches outer elytral edge; the third, in posterior third, with a longitudinal band that follows epipleura and reaches apex. Femora and median region of tibiae from yellow to orange.

Antennal tubercles with fine and dense punctures. Upper eye lobes well-separated, distance between upper lobes equal to three times the width of an upper lobe. Submentum excavated. Genae with short hairs near eyes and longer hairs in ventral region. Antennae 12–segmented, exceeding elytral apices, maximum at segment VII; apex of pedicel and segments III–X slightly expanded; scape glabrous, anterior third or half with transverse grooves and strongly punctate, others with fine and shallow punctures; subequal in width from base to apex. Segment III with shallow and uniform punctures, short and dense pubescence, denser in segments IV–XI; segment III ⅓ longer than scape and slightly longer than IV, segments IV–IX subequal in length, segments X and XI equal in length than III, segment XII 1/3 shorter than III.

Prothorax 1.5 wider than long, strongly swollen, rounded at sides and with dense, deep and confluent sexually dimorphic punctation; surface alveolate, feebly demarcated ( Fig. 98 View FIGURES 98–105 ). Antemedian tubercle feebly prominent and sometimes absent. Sexually dimorphic punctation of pronotum with indentations deep and rounded ( Figs 99–100 View FIGURES 98–105 ), denser and elongate at lateral region; each indentation with several clusters of pores (varying from one to four) distributed in all indentation, the pores may possess short and erect setae ( Figs 99–100 View FIGURES 98–105 ); between indentations are scattered points that may possess a small seta which is generally curved at the apex ( Fig. 101 View FIGURES 98–105 ). Lateral region of the pronotum with long, sparse and whitish hairs. Sexually dimorphic punctation absent on transverse carina, median and postmedian elevations, anterior and posterior depressions, anterior and posterior borders, posterior region of pronotum and fine median longitudinal band through pronotum. Postmedian elevations smooth or with very fine and shallow punctures. Prosternum with sexually dimorphic punctation denser than pronotum, some indentations asymmetric. Sides of prosternal sulcus with short and whitish hairs. Tubercle of prosternal sulcus projected posteriorly. Prosternal process smooth, elevated, and slightly narrowed at middle, subequal to procoxal cavity width; anteriorly with tubercle developed, directed towards prosternal sulcus tubercle. Mesosternal process, at most subequal to width of mesocoxal cavity; posterior margin truncate or slightly sinuous.

Scutellum approximately 1/5 length of elytra, with fine, shallow and sparse punctures. Elytra almost three times longer than prothorax; apices truncate and unarmed or sinuous with outer margin angled.

Femora and tibiae with short and sparse hairs. Sternites I–V smooth, with long and short, whitish and sparse hairs. Sternite I 1.5 times as long as II; sternites II–V subequal in length; segment V with apical margin slightly truncate.

Terminalia: Tergite VIII ( Fig. 107 View FIGURES 106–115 ) with apical margin slightly sinuous and adorned with yellow hairs. Sternite VIII ( Fig. 106 View FIGURES 106–115 ) transverse, apical margin emarginate and with long hairs at sides and decreasing in length to middle region; apophysis 3/4 as long as longest length of sternite. Ventral arc ( Fig. 108 View FIGURES 106–115 ) with apophysis short, about 1/6 as long as arms. Dorsal arc ( Fig. 109 View FIGURES 106–115 ) with some sparse hairs. Tegmen ( Figs 110–112 View FIGURES 106–115 ) 1/5 shorter than median lobe; distal region divided into parameres and these cylindrical-elongate, narrowed to apex, rounded and with short hairs; ring piece rounded, fused at apex, with short apical projection. Median lobe ( Figs 113–115 View FIGURES 106–115 ): dorsal lobe slightly shorter than ventral lobe; apex of dorsal lobe rounded; apex of ventral lobe acuminate; apical region about 2/3 as long as basal apophysis. Internal sac with sclerotized piece “U” shaped.

Female. Antennomeres VIII–XI yellow. Antennae exceeding elytral apices at segment IX.

Prothorax with fine and sparse punctures, less swollen that in males, lateral tubercles more visible. Anterior depression and prothoracic sides with long, sparse, erect and whitish hairs. Prosternal sulcus with long, dense, erect and whitish hairs. Tubercle in the anterior region of prosternal process reduced or absent.

Terminalia: Tergite VIII ( Fig. 116 View FIGURES 116–118 ) with apical margin slightly sinuous. Posterior region of sternite VIII ( Figs 102–105 View FIGURES 98–105 ) two times wider than long; with a row of aciculate setae as long as conchoidal setae; conchoidal setae with surface slightly wavy and with some slits; petiolate setae with dorsal slits; sternal apophysis about twice as long as posterior region. Ovipositor ( Figs 117–118 View FIGURES 116–118 ) with parallel lateral lobes, margins with long, fine and sparse hairs, inner margin with distinct angle near vulva and slightly narrowed to apex; spermatheca “C” shaped, curved in apical region and rounded at apex; spermathecal gland elongated and curved, shorter than spermatheca.

Variability. Head, prothorax, scape, pedicel, femora and tibiae vary from brownish-red to black. The described elytra color pattern corresponds to the type-specimen and may be an intermediate color pattern to the extremes that the species exhibits. This pattern varies from elytra almost entirely black except for two pairs of yellow spots, to brownish-yellow or brownish-orange elytra with faint yellow spots.

Measurements (mm). female/male. n=77/103. Total length, 23.68±3.05/24.85±3.06; prothorax length, 5.76±0.76/6.02±0.75; greatest prothorax width, 8.51±1.13/8.90±1.23; elytral length, 15.82±1.94/16.37±2.04; humeral width, 8.67±1.20/8.83±1.26.

Type material. We examined the male neotype ( Fig. 119 View FIGURES 119–130 ), from Brazil, Mato Grosso (Rio Verde) ( MNRJ) and the lectotypes of the synonyms: Trachyderes audouinii (female— Fig. 120 View FIGURES 119–130 ) and T. gloriosus (male— Fig. 121 View FIGURES 119–130 ), both deposited in the MNHN.

Discussion. Andraegoidus variegatus exhibits the greatest color variation, which had led many authors to describe various species and varieties. Examination of the lectotype of Trachyderes audouinii ( Fig. 120 View FIGURES 119–130 ) and Trachyderes gloriosus ( Fig. 121 View FIGURES 119–130 ) confirmed that they are synonymies of Andraegoidus variegatus . This species differs in possessing dense, long, erect and whitish hairs at the sides of the prothorax and in the prosternum and tubercle in the anterior region of the process prosternal ( Fig. 130 View FIGURES 119–130 ) that occurs in males and in most of females. For additional comments, see in A. lacordairei .

Geographical distribution. The species is reported to occur in Brazil (Pará, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Ceará to Rio Grande do Sul), Peru ( JU), Bolivia ( SC), Paraguay (SA, SP), Argentina (widely distributed) and Uruguay (CO, MO). A new state record from Paraná ( Brazil) is added ( Fig. 227 View FIGURE 227 ) .

Host plants. According to Monné (2001) the following host plants were cited for A. variegatus : Ficus carica L. ( Moraceae ), Eucalyptus spp. (Myrtaceae) , Cydonia oblonga Mill. , Pyrus communis L. ( Rosaceae ) and Citrus spp. (Rutaceae) .
