Agrilus paramacer Hespenheide View in CoL , New Species

( Figs. 14, 15 View FIGURES 10 – 17 , 24 View FIGURES 18 – 25 )

Description. Holotype male: Elongate, in cross-section flattened above, convex below, 11.5 mm long, 2.75 mm wide; above black with golden-green reflections, margins of pronotum and elytra, apices of elytra and beneath reddish-coppery, antennal segments 1–8 with greenish reflections; setae pale and recumbent, short, moderately dense, somewhat denser on front, in medial depression and sides of pronotum, in elytral costae, and beneath, setae dense and erect on prosternum and anterior1/2 of metasternum; whitish efflorescence on sides of pronotum, in upper anterior corners of metasternum and epimeron, and dorsal portion of abdominal ventrite 1.

Head with front transverse from above, from front very shallowly, irregularly depressed, surface coarsely rugose; antennal insertions joined by carina near upper edges, epistoma between antennal insertions 1/3 width of distance between inner margins of eyes, shallowly emarginate below, eyes oval, slightly emarginate on inner margins above middle; antennae serrate from segment 4, segments 2–4 elongate, segment 5 shorter and triangular, segments 6–11 rounded-triangular.

Pronotum slightly narrower than elytra at posterior margin, with sides nearly parallel, only very shallowly expanded and then slightly narrowing to apex; marginal and submarginal carinae slightly undulate, separated for most of length, joined for basal 0.5 mm; from above anterior margin slightly produced as broadly-rounded lobe; basal margin weakly angulately emarginate at middle of each elytron, nearly transverse before scutellum; disk relatively flat, with deep, broad depression along midline and oblique depressions just interior to and in front of prehumeral carinae to lateral margins; prehumeral carinae strong, narrow, nearly straight, 1/ 3 length of pronotum; surface coarsely transversely rugose. Scutellum pentagonal with fine transverse carina, acuminate behind.

Elytra subequal in width at humeri and beyond middle, lateral margins slightly emarginate between them, narrowing gradually toseparate, slightly flared apices, apices with strong medial tooth; flanked by smaller teeth; disk relatively flat, convex at sides, each elytron with shallow oval depression at base joining with strong costa nearly to apex, costa with weak medial carina for basal 2/3 and very weak carina lateral to costa for middle 1/3; surface finely, transversely rugose.

Prosternum with prosternal process broad, slightly widening behind coxae, rounded at apex, prosternal lobe broadly rounded, with shallow, rounded medial notch. Posterior coxae with posterior margin nearly straight, upper exterior angles obtuse. Abdomen regularly convex in cross section with distinct suture between ventrites 1 and 2, pygidium with long projecting carina. Hind legs with first metatarsal segment longer than next three combined, tarsal claws similar on all feet, cleft with short, blunt inner tooth. Genitalia as in Figure 24 View FIGURES 18 – 25 .

Allotype female: As male except 13.9 mm long, 3.7 mm wide; antennal segments entirely reddishcoppery, prosternum and anterior portion of metasternum glabrous.

Type material. Holotype. México: Oaxaca, 2.5 km S S. Fco. Huapanapan, 1830 m, 18˚06’ N 97˚40’ W, 29.10.1990, C.L. Bellamy ( UNAM). Allotype. Same data as holotype ( CLBC). Paratypes. Paratype also to be deposited in CHAH.

Host. Two specimens have been cut from a dead trunk of Celtis sp. ( Ulmaceae ) and five others were beaten from Celtis sp.

Etymology. This species is named for its resemblance to Agrilus macer LeConte.

Discussion. This species is superficially similar to Agrilus macer , which also uses Celtis as a host ( Nelson et al. 2008), but differs in several important characters: A. macer lacks the strong medial depression of the pronotum, lacks the weak carinae within and lateral to the elytral costae, and has very different genitalia ( Fisher 1928, fig. 22). Males from the type series measure 11.5–12.6 mm long (mean = 11.98 mm for 7 specimens), and females measure 12.3–14.6 mm long (mean = 13.47 mm for 10 specimens).
