Diagnosis. Cyrtocapsus schaffneri ( Figs. 52–54 View FIGURES 49–57 ) is recognized by the dorsally pale head with a transverse dark line on the vertex between the eyes, the long labium extending to the middle coxae or beyond, the apically brown antennal segment I, evenly dark pronotum and hemelytron, the dark brown to fuscous middle and hind coxae, apically fuscous femora, and largely fuscous tibiae.

This species keys to couplet 6 with the similar but the much smaller C. glabratus ( Figs.27, 28 View FIGURES 18–28 ), based on the fuscous femora, at least on the apical thirds, and the dark brown middle and hind coxae. These species also share a dorsally dark and ventrally white head, long labium extending at least to the middle coxae, the shiny, impunctate, glabrous calli, and having all the femora at least partially dark brown. Cyrtocapsus schaffneri is separated by the larger size (3.72–4.08 mm versus 2.85–2.94 mm), the hind femur darkened only on the apical two thirds with the dorsal and ventral surfaces frequently paler (versus the hind femur entirely dark brown to base), and the parameres ( Figs. 95, 96 View FIGURES 85–98 ), especially the right paramere ( Fig. 96 View FIGURES 85–98 ).

Description. Male ( Fig. 52 View FIGURES 49–57 ) (n = 5; holotype measurements in parentheses): Length to apex of membrane 3.72–4.08 mm (4.00 mm), length to base of cuneus 2.60–2.68 mm (2.68 mm), widest width across hemelytra 1.44–1.54 mm (1.55 mm). Head: Width 0.82–0.83 mm (0.83 mm), interocular width 0.34–0.37 mm (0.37 mm). Labium: Length 1.12–1.20 mm (1.15 mm). Antenna: Segment I length 0.35–0.42 mm (0.38 mm); II, 0.64–0.69 mm (0.64 mm); III (n = 3), 0.45–0.46 mm (0.48 mm); IV (n = 4), 0.61–0.67 mm (0.70 mm). Pronotum: Median length 0.96–1.02 mm (1.01 mm), basal width 1.28–1.31 mm (1.30 mm).

Coloration: Head yellowish brown, vertex with a transverse fuscous line or bar between eyes, frons with narrow, fuscous lines on either side of middle, clypeus fuscous or black, sides darker brown, undersurface pale yellowish white; eyes dark reddish brown. Labium pale yellowish white. Antenna yellowish white, segment I sometimes pale brown on apical half. Pronotum, scutellum, and hemelytron uniformly black; membrane clear translucent, veins and inside of areole dark smoky brown. Ventral surface black. Middle and hind coxae dark brown to fuscous, with bases paler, front coxa pale yellowish white; hind femur fuscous on apical two thirds, middle and front femora fuscous on apical third, pale basally; tibiae fuscous on basal two thirds to one half, pale beyond.

Texture and vestiture: Head shiny, impunctate, weakly rugose, with short, tight, silvery sericeous setae, especially across base and along inner margins of eyes and median line. Pronotum shiny, evenly and finely punctate; calli impunctate, glabrous, weakly raised; remainder of pronotum with short, tight, silvery, sericeous setae. Scutellum impunctate, with dense, short, silvery sericeous setae. Hemelytron weakly shiny, impunctate with dense, evenly distributed, silvery, sericeous setae.

Male genitalia: Left paramere ( Fig. 95 View FIGURES 85–98 ) slender, C-shaped, apically pointed. Right paramere ( Fig. 96 View FIGURES 85–98 ) stout, Cshaped, apically rounded.

Female ( Figs. 53, 54 View FIGURES 49–57 ) (n = 5): Length to apex of membrane 3.80–4.16 mm, length to base of cuneus 2.48–2.73 mm, widest width across hemelytra 1.24–1.50 mm. Head: Width 0.82–0.86 mm, interocular width 0.37–0.38 mm. Labium: Length 1.12–1.17 mm. Antenna: Segment I length 0.35–0.37 mm; II, 0.56–0.66 mm; III (n = 4), 0.45–0.51 mm; IV (n = 3), 0.69–0.74 mm. Pronotum: Median length 0.98–1.02 mm, basal width 1.28–1.36 mm.

Etymology. This species is named after a good friend and colleague, the late mirid specialist Joseph C. Schaffner, whose greatest legacy is the vast collection of well-prepared Heteroptera he established at TAMU from the Neotropics, especially Mexico.

Host. Unknown.

Distribution. Known only from Panama.
