Sander and Faber (1998) referred MHI 1314 to Omphalosaurus . Maisch and Lehmann (2002) designated a left maxilla ( GSUB V 1427 ) as the holotype of a new species Omphalosaurus peyeri . This specimen came from the Rüdersdorf Formation of the Lower Muschelkalk Subgroup (Anisian: Pelsonian-Illyrian) of Rüdersdorf near Berlin, Brandenburg. Wintrich et al. (2017 b) reidentified this specimen as Placodus cf. P. gigas .
