"Habitat in Virginia." RCN: 7696.

Lectotype (Reveal in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 49. 1993): Herb. Clifford: 489, Oidea (Caesalpinoides) 12, sheet A (BM-000647669) .

Generitype of Gleditsia Linnaeus.

Current name: Gleditsia triacanthos L. ( Fabaceae : Caesalpinioideae ).

Note: Isely (in Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 25: 214. 1975) noted material in LINN, observing that 1229.1 "would be a reasonable candidate as lectotype ", along with (unseen) material in the Clifford herbarium. However, he did not make a choice of type.
