Ferreira, cols.’

Distribution. Argentina (Misiones), Brazil (Pará, Ceará [new record], Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, Santa Catarina), Bolivia (Santa Cruz), Paraguay and Peru (Huánuco).

Remarks. This species has a widespread collecting record ( Hermes & Melo 2008: Fig. 117). However, this is the first record for the northeast region of Brazil, with the specimen having being collected in a remnant of Atlantic Forest in the transition to the Caatinga biome. The male from Maranhão was collected in a reserve which is included in the Amazonian biome. It differs from the male from Ceará and all other specimens seen so far by the presence of a yellow band adjacent to the propodeal lamella. Coloration, however, is known to vary largely among vespids (e.g. Zeta de Saussure and Pachymenes orellanae (Schulz) , see Carpenter 1987 and Grandinete et al. 2015, respectively), and it is regarded only as intraspecific variation. The male genitalia were examined and matched specimens of P. subapicalis examined and illustrated by Hermes and Melo (2008).
