Hydromanicus demden Oláh & Johanson , new species

Fig. 1–4

This ebony black animal is close to H. ovatus Li, Tien & Dudgeon from South China and reported here from North Vietnam. The 2 species have similar body and wing characters, except H. demden is darker. In addition, H. demden is separated from H. ovatus in the genitalia, involving a diamond-shaped median keel of tergum IX, not short and wide. Segment X is more robust, with a widening, not narrowing apex. The harpagones are as long as the coxopodites, while in H. ovatus it is very short and two-partite. In addition, the phallotheca is more sinuate, almost sigmoid, with a short sclerotized endothecal process.

Male. Body and wings ebony black, fuscous. Forewing membrane without pattern. Process or protuberance absent on sternum V; with freely flapping, shallowly rounded plate. Maxillary palp formula I-(II, III, IV)-V. Maxillary palps short, reaching to end of mesonotum. Dorsum of head black, with 7 black setal warts. Swollen setal wart present on both proepisternae, with long black setae. Small setal wart present on both precoxae. Pretarsal claw asymmetrical, laterally flanked setal bundle present on all legs. Spur formula 244. Posteroapical spur on protibia very small.

Male wings. Venation typical for the genus. Forewing crossveins m-cu and cu separate. Sc and R separate before C. Cu2 and A reaching wing margin separately. Hind wing Sc and R meeting before costa, after cross- vein r. Crossvein s located anteriorly of r; crossvein m-cu present. Stem of M and Cu1 separate. False vein of wing convolution runs near, along Cu1 stem. Median cell open. Fork 1 present. Forewing length 12.0 mm, hind wing length 9.0 mm.

Male genitalia. Segment IX fused annularly; short, dorsum about as long as ventrum ( Fig. 1). Pair of median keels very short, broad, with granulose dorsal and lateral surfaces. Anterior margins shallowly arciform. Antecosta well developed, present in single line; narrowing gradually dorsad and ventrad; sub-marginal area with well visible external groove of antecostal suture. Apical lobe on posterolateral margins small, triangular, located above articulation of gonocoxites. Posterior spine rows continuous, almost complete, present from triangular apical lobes to slope of broad, median keel; with uniformly short setae. Depression between segment IX and segment X deep, stepwise, with rounded, obtusely angled step corner. Body of segment X long, curving dorsad; with rounded, strongly broadening blunt apex in lateral view ( Fig. 1); forming broad plate with rounded apical wings in dorsal view ( Fig. 2). Preanal appendages short, pressed to median keel of segment IX ( Fig. 1); rounded foliate, covered with setae nested in elevated alveoli. Apicoventral setose lobes modified into pair of large, setose lobes covered by setae from before apex ( Fig. 1). Dorsal interlobular gap narrow, deep, demarcated by large, apicoventral setose lobe of rounded wings ( Fig. 2). Apicodorsal setose lobe reduced to setose surface at mid-length of segment X. Smooth cavity on segment X absent. Longitudinal sutures weak, nearly invisible. Coxopodites S-shaped, stout, do not reach apex of segment X ( Fig. 1). Harpagones as long as coxopodites ( Fig. 1, 3); rod-like, narrowing distad. Phallic apparatus ( Fig. 4) simply bent, almost S-shaped; curving ventrad; basal section obtusely angled, without broadening; as wide as horizontal section. Tube of horizontal phallotheca with convex dorsum; phallotheca ending distally in pair of stout, short, dorsad curving, sclerous, endothecal processes with truncate and dorsad turning apices; narrow in ventral view, nearly forming a circle; phallotrema with distal opening of endophallus surrounded by small phallotremal sclerites; endophallus present as tube filling half phallotheca; narrowing anteriad to gonopore constriction.

Holotype male: VIETNAM: Bach Ma , 700 m, 22.ii.2006, light, [J. Oláh Jr.] - ( OPC, alcohol).

Distribution. Vietnam.

Etymology. demden , from Vietnamese “dem”, night, and “den”, black, referring to the dark or ebony black colour of the species.
