Hydropsyche kiogupa Oláh & Schefter , new species
Fig. 183–187
This species is most similar to H. pallipenne Banks from Malaysia (Pahang) and Pakistan, from which it is easily distinguished by its characteristically S-shaped gonocoxites. Moreover, the phallotremal sclerites are robust, not tapering and slender; and the sclerous endothecal process is bilobed, with a small, dorsobasal lobe. Male. Body and wings brown. Forewing membranes light brown with dark brown maculations, especially on veins. Sternum V with protuberance. Maxillary palp formula I-II-(III, IV)-V, segment V as long as segments I–IV together. Head dorsum brown, with 9 brown warts. Swollen setal wart present on proepisternum. Pretarsal claws asymmetrical, laterally flanked by setal bundle. Spur formula 244. Both protibiae with posteroapical spur equal to anteroapical spur.
Wings. Venation typical for the genus. Forewing crossveins m-cu and cu separate. Sc and R, and Cu2 and A run separately before costa. Hind wing Sc and R meeting before costa at crossvein r. Stem of M and Cu1 running closely. Median cell closed. Fork 1 present. Forewing length 9.3 mm.
Male genitalia. Abdominal segment IX fused annularly; median keel slightly narrowing in dorsal view ( Fig. 184); dorsal and lateral surfaces granulous; anterior margin arciform, ventrum short; dorsum slightly longer than ventrum ( Fig. 183). Antecosta well developed into double line, narrowing dorsally before margin, broadest ventrally; external groove of antecostal suture present. Apical lobe on posterolateral margins sharply triangular ( Fig. 183). Posterior spine rows continuous, but scarce, except on apical lobes ( Fig. 183). Depression between segments IX and X very short and deep, oblique anteriorly, not vertical. Body of segment X large, dorsal margin short, ventral margin long ( Fig. 183); subquadrangular in dorsal view ( Fig. 184). Lateral setose areas (preanal appendages) forming compact ovoid area with pale background centrally on lateral surfaces, and distal setae scattered toward apical margin of segment X. Apicoventral setose lobes forming pair of stout, short, digitiform processes with apical setae; directed posteromesad. Dorsal interlobular gap small, diamond-shaped, encircled by apicoventral setose lobes ( Fig. 184). Apicodorsal setose lobes fusing into setose ridge, or crest; elongated dorsally, shifted anteriorly to short, deep intersegmental depression; setae arranged in lateral rows ( Fig. 184). Smooth cavity forming small, shallow depression, occupying basal part of segment X. Short, wide, darkly pigmented transverse suture present on each side, running ventrally from bottom of intersegmental depression ( Fig. 183); visible in dorsal view as prominent suture crossing segment X in intersegmental depression. Longitudinal sutures encircling ventral part of shallow cavity. Coxopodites reaching apex of segment X; strongly sinuous, slightly dilating distally from mid-length; weakly curving mesad in ventral view ( Fig. 185). Harpagones parallel sided and curving dorsally along their lengths, slightly capitate in lateral view ( Fig. 183); curving mediad in ventral view ( Fig. 185). Phallic apparatus simply bent, with slightly developed ventrad curving basal part; horizontal section of phallotheca straight, dilating apically. Endophallus forming narrow tube attached to dorsal wall of phallotheca; reaching bend of phallic apparatus. Phallotremal sclerites well separated into pair of stout, claw-like processes with blunt apex; falciform in lateral view; pincer-shaped in ventral view ( Fig. 187). Pair of sclerous endothecal processes arising laterally on dominating bilobed phallotremal sclerites; basodorsal lobe small, visible in lateral view ( Fig. 186). Sclerotized ventral process of phallotheca shorter than phallotremal sclerites, with slightly bilobed apex.
Holotype male: INDIA: Manipur, Ukhrul , 15.vii.1961 [F. Schmid], ( ROM, pinned with cleared abdomen in plastic genital vial).
Etymology. kiogupa , from “kiogupa”, meaning double in Sanskrit, referring to the double-curving, Sshaped gonocoxite.
