Diagnosis. This species is superficially similar to S. hydeana , but it can be distinguished from the latter by the median facia of the forewing and its uniform gray hindwing lacking strigulae. Sparganothoides coloratana and S. hydeana also can be distinguished by the genitalia; those of S. colorata are more similar to those to S. machimiana than to H. hydeana . The browner forewing of the male and uniform gray hindwing separate S. coloratana from the more southern S. laderana .
Description. Male. Head: Frons smooth scaled, with white-tipped gray to brownish gray scales; vertex roughened, with white-tipped brown to brownish gray scales. Labial palpus grayish white mesally, scales white-tipped brownish gray and dark brown laterally. Antennal scaling brown and brownish gray. Thorax: Dorsum smooth scaled, brown to brownish gray. Forewing length 9.9–10.8 mm (= 10.4; n = 2). Forewing ground color pale brown to yellowish brown, with moderately dense scattering of brown and brownish gray scales; median and subterminal fasciae brown, interrupted at mid-wing; indistinct brown transverse strigulae throughout subterminal and terminal areas; indistinct brown spot at apex of discal cell. Fringe pale brown. Hindwing gray with darker gray transverse strigulae in apical region. Abdomen: Genitalia ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 7–12 ; slide #JAP5849; EME; Mexico, Chihuahua, Sierra Alta Tarahumara, 28 mi SW LaJunta; n = 2) with uncus long, slender, uniform in width, elbowed at nearly 90° angle at two-thirds distance from base, with long setae dorsally and patch of small setae ventrally; tegumen raised and rounded at base of uncus; socius subtriangular posteriorly, secondary arms long, slender, abruptly angled near middle, enlarged apices asymmetrically lobed, moderately boot-shaped; transtilla strongly sclerotized, straight, spines short, numerous over most of posterior margin, anterior process reinforced with invagination at middle; valva subrectangular with sclerotized curved crease connecting to near base of sacculus and extending over two-thirds of valva, sacculus and costa straight, pulvinus present; phallus pistol-shaped, aedeagus parallel-sided and slightly curved, shorter than phallobase, attenuate apically, attached to juxta by a thin process; cornuti with a minute spine near base.
Female. Head, Thorax: Essentially as described for male, except forewing grayer, markings more subdued. Forewing length 9.6–11.4 mm (= 10.7; n = 4). Abdomen: Genitalia ( Fig. 43 View FIGURES 39–47 ; slide #5563; EME; Mexico, Chihuahua, Sierra Alta Tarahumara, 28 mi SW La Junta; n = 1) with papillae anales parallel-sided, rounded posteriorly; sterigma strongly sclerotized ventrally, concave anteriorly; ductus bursae short, widening anteriorly; corpus bursae large, irregularly rounded; signum about three times as long as wide, simple, curved, weakly bilobed, blunt at apices.
Type material. Holotype: Male: MEXICO: CHIHUAHUA: Sierra Alta Tarahumara , 28 mi SW La Junta, 6900’, 7.vii.1986, P. Jump ( EME).

Immature stages. Unknown.
Etymology. This species is named for its dark, smoky appearance: coloro (= to give tone or color).
