Diagnosis. Sparganothoides audentiana is distinguished superficially by a well-defined, dark, apico-terminal band. The male genitalia are distinguished from those of all congeners by the shape of the valval crease, which is bent near the middle.

Description. Male. Head: Frons yellowish white to pale orange, smooth scaled; vertex roughened, pale orange to orange. Labial palpus yellowish white mesally, orange laterally. Antennal scaling orange and brown. Thorax: Dorsum smooth scaled, with pale orange to brown-tipped orange scales. Forewing length 11.1–11.7 mm (= 11.4; n = 2). Forewing ground color yellowish brown to orange with uniform speckling of browntipped orange scales; pattern elements brownish orange to brown; subbasial facia interrupted below costa, faint inward to anal margin; median facia short, distinct; subterminal fascia brown; heavy brown transverse strigulae throughout subterminal and terminal areas; distinct brown tornal mark from discal cell to margin; suffused brown spot at apex of discal cell. Fringe yellowish white to pale orange. Hindwing white to pale yellowish gray with pale brown to brownish gray transverse strigulae throughout, but more dense in apical and distal regions. Abdomen: Genitalia ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 13–18 ; slide #JJK056; VBC; Mexico, Tamaulipas, Gómez Farias; n = 2) with uncus long, slender, uniform in width, elbowed at nearly 90° angle at two-thirds distance from base, with sparse long setae dorsally and patch of small setae ventrally; tegumen raised, triangular at base of uncus; socius rounded posteriorly, secondary arms long, slender, abruptly angled near middle, enlarged apices asymmetrically lobed, boot-shaped; transtilla strongly sclerotized, distinctly bilobed, spines short, numerous over most of posterior margin, anterior process reinforced with invagination at middle; valva subrectangular, with sclerotized curved crease connecting to near base of sacculus and extending over two-thirds of valva, sacculus and costa straight, pulvinus present; phallus pistol-shaped, aedeagus parallel-sided, slightly curved, shorter than phallobase, attenuate apically, attached to juxta by a narrow process; cornuti in dense clump, probably with a minute spine near base (not visible in genitalia preparations).

Female. Unknown.

Type material. Holotype: Male: MEXICO: TAMAULIPAS: Gómez Farias , 2200 m, 29.v.1997, V. Becker ( VBC).

Paratype (1♂). NUEVO LEON: Potosí , 2800 m, 26.vi.1997 (1♂), V. Becker ( VBC) .

Immature stages. Unknown.

Etymology. The name is derived from the Latin “audenter” (= boldness, courage) and refers to the bold markings of the forewings which are unusual in this species group.
