Description. Colour orange, apices of mandibles black, abdomen black, sometimes with orange base of ventrite 1, brownish middle parts of ventrites or median plate on last ventrite.
Measurements. Males: 8.20–9.20 mm; females: 8.40–10.20 mm.
Male ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 7 – 9 ). Labrum transverse, anterior margin slightly concave. Interocular space narrow, 0.85 times as wide as transverse diameter of eye. Antennae 0.75 times as long as body, length ratio of antennomeres equals 25-9- 23-28 -30-28-26-25-25-23-27.
Pronotum 1.40 times as broad as long, widest at first quarter. Anterior margin slightly concave.
Elytra shiny, 2.35 times as long as wide and 0.75 times as long as body; apex right-angled.
Protarsomere 1 enlarged, subparallel, 1.90 times as long as wide, 1.45 times as wide as protarsomere 2. Length ratio of protarsomeres 1–4 equals 25-20-9-18. Metatarsomere 1 enlarged, outer margin straight, inner margin slightly rounded, 2.80 times as long as wide, 1.20 times as wide as metatarsomere 2. Length ratio of metatarsomeres 1–4 equals 31-22-9-22.
Abdominal processes slender, very widely separated (distance between bases of appendages is more than length of each appendage), short, reaching base of ventrite 4, parallel-sided, wider in basal quarter ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 10 – 17 ). Median plate of last ventrite with distinct ridge in middle and two lateral depressions.
Median lobe of aedeagus symmetrical, widest at basal third, convergent anteriorly, subapically slightly widened, distal region being subtriangular with rounded tip ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 24 – 25 ).
Female. Interocular space wide, 1.90 times as wide as transverse diameter of eye. Elytra dull. All first tarsomeres shorter and thinner than in male. Last ventrite deeply concaved before widely rounded apex. Spermatheca: cornu moderately bent with apical part narrowed, proximal spermathecal duct bent in middle ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 33 – 39 ).
Differential diagnosis. Hoplasoma picifemora seems to be endemic to the Luzon Island. Males can be easily distinguished by the widely separated bases of abdominal appendages (the distance between bases of appendages is longer than the length of an appendage) ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 10 – 17 ). In all other Philippine species with separated bases of abdominal appendages ( H. bakeri sp. nov., H. mcgregori sp. nov., H. semperi sp. nov. and H. magellani sp. nov.), the bases are closer to each other than in H. picifemora ( Figs 10, 12, 13, 17 View FIGURES 10 – 17 ). Female, with the last ventrite deeply concaved subapically and apex widely rounded, is similar to that of H. magellani sp. nov. However, in H. picifemora , the subapical concavities are deeper and apex narrower than in H. magellani sp. nov. ( Figs 28, 32 View FIGURES 26 – 32 ).
Distribution. The Philippines (Luzon).
Comments. The number of type specimens of H. picifemora is not specified in the original description ( Allard 1888). Allard´s collection deposited in the MNHN includes two syntypes, both females, which undoubtedly belong to two different species. The female bearing original Allard´s label “ picifemora / Philippines ”, which has a truncate process at the apex of the last ventrite, is designated as the lectotype. The paralectotype is a female from Luzon with strongly convex apex of the last ventrite and this specimen undoubtedly belongs to H. philippinense . Comparison of the available material collected in Luzon show that a male of H. picifemora was described recently ( Medvedev 2002) as H. luzonica which is a new synonym of H. picifemora .
Hoplasoma semperi Bezd ĕ k, sp. nov. ( Figs 9 View FIGURES 7 – 9 , 17 View FIGURES 10 – 17 , 25 View FIGURES 24 – 25 )
Type locality. The Philippines.
Type material. Holotype 3 ( ISNB), labelled: “ Philippines / Semper [yellow label, p] // M. R. Belg. [w, p] // HOPLASOMA / philippinensis Jac. [p] / V. Laboissière det., 1939: [w, h]”. Paratype: 3 ( ISNB), labelled: “Restit. 1885. [w, p] // M. R. Belg. [w, p] // HOPLASOMA / philippinensis Jac. [p] / V. Laboissière det., 1939: [w, h]”. The specimens are provided with one additional red label: “ HOLOTYPUS [or PARATYPUS, resp.], / Hoplasoma / semperi sp. n., / J. Bezdĕk det. 2009”.
Description. Colour orange, except apices of mandibles black, abdomen black, with brownish base of first ventrite and extreme posterior margins of all ventrites.
Measurements. Males: 8.10-8.40 mm (holotype 8.40 mm).
Male (holotype, Fig. 9 View FIGURES 7 – 9 ). Labrum transverse, anterior margin straight, slightly oblique to right. Interocular space narrow, 0.92 times as wide as transverse diameter of eye. Antennae 0.77 times as long as body, length ratio of antennomeres 1 to 11 equals 26-10-22 -34-30-28-29-26-26-26-28.
Pronotum 1.35 times as broad as long, widest at anterior quarter. Anterior margin slightly concave.
Elytra shiny, 2.20 times as long as wide and 0.75 times as long as body; apex right-angled.
Protarsomere 1 enlarged, subparallel, 2.10 times as long as wide, 1.15 times as wide as protarsomere 2. Length ratio of protarsomeres 1–4 equals 21-16-9-22. Metatarsomere 1 enlarged, subparallel, 2.95 times as long as wide, 0.95 times as wide as metatarsomere 2. Length ratio of metatarsomeres 1–4 equals 25-17-8-24.
Abdominal appendages broadly separated, short, elongate triangular and slightly divergent, reaching two third length of ventrite 3 ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 10 – 17 ). Median plate of last ventrite with distinct thin ridge in middle, laterally with two distinct depressions and apically with two small depressions.
Median lobe of aedeagus in dorsal view symmetrical, relatively robust, parallel-sided, distinctly widened subapically forming triangle with rounded tip ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 24 – 25 ).
Female. Unknown.
Differential diagnosis. Hoplasoma semperi sp. nov. is similar to H. mcgregori sp. nov., H. bakeri sp. nov. and H. magellani sp. nov. All these species can be differentiated from H. semperi sp. nov. based on the shape of abdominal appendages which are elongate triangular in H. semperi sp. nov., parallel-sided in H. bakeri sp. nov. and H. magellani sp. nov., and medially thickened in H. mcgregori sp. nov. Moreover, abdominal appendages in H. bakeri sp. nov. and H. magellani sp. nov. are parallel-sided, while in H. semperi sp. nov. and H. mcgregori sp. nov., the abdominal appendages are gradually narrowed towards the apex ( Figs 10, 12, 13, 17 View FIGURES 10 – 17 ). The structure of the median lobe of aedeagus in H. semperi sp. nov. resembles that in H. magellani sp. nov. However, in H. semperi sp. nov., aedeagus is subapically much more widened ( Figs 20 View FIGURES 18 – 23 , 25 View FIGURES 24 – 25 ).
Distribution. The holotype was collected in “ Philippines ” and the labels of the paratype bear no concrete locality. Thus, the precise distribution within the Philippines is not known.
Etymology. Dedicated to Georg Semper (1837-1909), a German entomologist who collected the holotype of this new species.
