Note: the name Hyalomma aegyptium has been extensively confused with related and unrelated species (even taxa outside the genus Hyalomma ), as shown in Keirans (1985c); consequently, many redescriptions of Hyalomma aegyptium have been ignored here. The problems attending correct identification of this species were already noted by Feldman-Muhsam (1948), who found that various authors applied the name Hyalomma aegyptium to different species. Camicas et al. (1998) treat Hyalomma aegyptium as an Oriental and Palearctic species, but no bona fide Oriental localities have been found for this tick, while Arthur (1963) lists Afrotropical localities for Hyalomma aegyptium that are considered doubtful here. Neumann (1899) allegedly described the nymph of Hyalomma aegyptium , but that description was excluded in Neumann (1911a) , who extensively confused Hyalomma aegyptium with other species in the same genus, and we have therefore excluded the descriptions in Neumann (1899, 1911a) from the above lists. Apanaskevich (2003a) also states that descriptions of the immature stages of Hyalomma aegyptium are not useful for comparative purposes, but no reasons have been found to invalidate the above descriptions and redescriptions of the larva and nymph of this species.
