Subgenus Lophotyna Hampson, 1910 View in CoL , stat. nov.
Lophotyna Hampson, 1910 View in CoL , Catalogue of Lepidoptera Phalaenae View in CoL in the British Museum, 9: 19.
Type species: Mamestra albirena Moore, 1867 , by the original designation.
Diagnosis. The subgenus can be subdivided into five species-groups well different from each other by their forewing colouration (which varies from orange and rusty brown to grey brown) and shape. Nevertheless, despite the strong external dissimilarity of different species, the male and female genitalia ground plan of the subgenus is quite uniform and only slight differences between the species-groups can be found. The male genitalia structure of Lophotyna is extremely similar to that of the subgenus Bousinixis . However, Lophotyna differs from Bousinixis by its strongly elongate and narrow apical part of the juxta. Additionally, the valvae of Lophotyna species are more tapered distally and have more separated cuculli than in Bousinixis . The female genitalia of Lophotyna and Bousinixis display no remarkable differences.
Distribution. Species of the genus are distributed from Near East (south-eastern Turkey and Arabian Peninsula) through Afghanistan and Himalaya to western Myanmar and south-western China (Yunnan).
