Diagnosis
Arista bare in male, short pubescent in female; scutum without transverse band but centre with silver-grey pilosity and microtrichosity; postpronotum white; scutellum white; anatergite and katatergite completely white; legs completely yellow; wing, anterior apical band complete, touching discal band, in male area between anterior apical band and posterior apical band partially darker coloured, discal band not reaching posterior margin; abdomen mainly shining brown.
Description
Head. Antennal segments yellow-orange. Arista bare. Frons ventral part yellow-white, dorsal part yellow-orange. Two frontals, placed parallel to medial eye margin; two orbitals, placed slightly convergent with anterior orbital located more medially. Face white. Occiput pale yellow in dorsal fourth, with two darker patches; otherwise white.
Thorax. Scutum shining black-brown, with dark pilosity; centre with silver-grey pilosity and microtrichosity but no distinct transverse bands. Postpronotum white. Anepisternum pale yellow, with white band occupying posterodorsal part, its ventral margin reaching posteroventral corner; with pale pilosity; one anepisternal seta. Anatergite and katatergite white. Scutellum white. Subscutellum brown.
Legs pale yellow.
Wing ( Figure 1A View Figure 1 ). Wing bands brown, well developed but with diffused margins. Basal part wing brownish coloured, subbasal irregular dark spots or streaks present, no distinct subbasal band. Anterior apical band covering cells r 1 and r 2+3 completely, area between anterior apical band and posterior apical band largely darker coloured, merging the two bands partially. Subapical band touching anterior apical band or almost so. Discal band and anterior apical band united at pterostigma. Discal band not reaching posterior wing margin, basally confluent with subbasal streaks and spots. R-M ratio 0.82–0.85.
Abdomen. Shining brown, tergite 1 and posterior 3/4 of tergites 2 and 4 with greyish band; tergite 5 with posteromedian part yellow.
Female. As male except for the following characters: arista very short pubescent; frons darker orange; femora, especially front and mid femur, darker yellow. Wing with distinctly separated anterior and posterior apical bands and subapical band. Posterior apical band touching anterior apical band only at base; subapical band isolated. Female terminalia, oviscape shorter than abdominal tergites, shining brown, with black pilosity. Aculeus as in Figure 3d View Figure 3 , orange, flattened, about eight times as long as wide; aculeus tip slightly narrowed, probably pointed as in Figure 4f View Figure 4 (only paratype of P. thyene available which has tip missing; general shape similar to that of P. umbrina ).
Body length. 4.00– 4.60 mm; wing length 4.00– 4.80 mm.
Material examined
Holotype. 3, SOUTH AFRICA, Zululand , 2.I.1922, R.H. Harris ( SANC).
Holotype thyene. 3, SOUTH AFRICA, Natal , Umhlanga, October 1937, W.E. Marriott, M637 [= reared from fruits of Loranthus sp. according to Munro’s notebooks] ( SANC).
Paratypes thyene. SOUTH AFRICA, ♀, same locality and date as holotype thyene , M637 ( NMSA) .
Distribution
South Africa.
Hosts
Reared from fruits of Loranthus sp. (M637, cf. material examined), and Tapinanthus rubromarginatus (Engl.) Danser (as Loranthus rubromarginatus M638; see Munro (1939a). Material not seen).
Comments
P. thyene View in CoL is conspecific with P. amazuluana View in CoL . Munro (1939a) indicates that the former can be differentiated by the denser microtrichosity on the centre of the mesonotum. However, comparison of type material shows it is similar but probably partly abraded in amazuluana View in CoL the type of which is in poor condition. Wing image shown for P. amazuluana View in CoL in Munro (1929) does not correspond to the actual wing pattern observed in the type specimen. It probably belongs to P. diademata View in CoL , P. mirathrix or a related species.
