Genus Neoschizodus Giebel, 1855 View in CoL

Type species. Lyrodon laevigatum ( Goldfuss, 1837) View in CoL , Anisian , Middle Triassic, Rudersdorf, Germany .

Diagnosis. The diagnosis follows Newell & Boyd (1975). Orthogyrous to moderately prosogyrous shell with slightly incurved beak. Posterior ridge angular to subangular in transverse profile. Myophorian hinge; teeth and sockets smooth or bearing transverse striations.

Remarks. These specimens have most of the required diagnostic criteria for assignment to Neoschizodus : an orthogyrate to moderately prosogyrate shell with an incurved beak and a posterior ridge angular to subangular in transverse. The nymph, teeth and umbonal platform were not present in these specimens so it is not known whether these specimens possess the myophorian hinge that is also diagnostic of this genus. These specimens do, however, have a similar external morphology to other Early and Middle Triassic specimens assigned to Neoschizodus (e.g. Kumagae & Nakazawa 2009) and are, therefore, referred to this genus.
