Distribution and remarks: circumglobal in temperate and tropical waters throughout all oceans. Eastern Atlantic: known from Côte d’Ivoire but may probably be more wide-ranging. Sometimes in synonymy with M. japanica . Observed along the coast of Gabon caught by industrial trawlers and artisanal boats (Chartrain and De Bruyne, pers. obs.). CITES Appendix II.
