Type material. Holotype ♂, CHINA: Yunnan Province: Mengla County, Xishuangbanna Menglun Nature Reserve, 550 m, 8. II. 2004, coll. Jie Wu and Daiyuan Bai.

Description. Head black, with slight metallic hue; pronotum black, with explanate margin reddish brown; scutellum with color similar to pronotum; elytra blackish brown, with an oblique ill-defined H-shaped reddish brown macula in basal half from humeral angle but not reaching suture, with posterior sutural area and posterolateral angle reddish brown; abdomen blackish brown, with posterior margin of every tergite paler; antennae yellowish brown, with antennomere I slightly paler, labrum and mandibles dark brown, maxillary and labial palpi pale brown; legs yellowish brown.

BL = 8.1 mm, BW = 2.0 mm, HL/PL/EL = 1.00: 1.18: 1.57, HW/PW/EW = 1.00: 1.01: 1.24

Head ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 A) round, wider than long, in dorsal view HW/HL = 1.28, HEL/HTL = 9.90; frons with moderately deep, Y-shaped impression; four setiferous punctures along medial margin of eye between anterior and posterior frontal setiferous punctures; posterior frontal setiferous puncture situated anterior to level of posterior margin of eye, separated from posteriomedial margin of eye by a distance shorter than the diameter of the puncture; temporal setiferous puncture situated very close to posterior margin of eye, separated by a distance shorter than the diameter of the puncture; dorsal surface quite polished, shallowly and sparsely punctate.

Pronotum ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 B) wider than long, PW/PL = 1.10, slightly narrowed anteriorly, lateral and posterior margins broadly rounded; posterolateral and posterior margins moderately explanate; one setiferous puncture in each dorsal row, situated close to anterior margin; large lateral setiferous puncture with socket almost touching marginal groove; surface strongly polished, without microsculpture, only sparsely and extremely shallowly punctate near anterior angle.

Elytra ( Figs. 6 View FIGURE 6 C) as wide as long, EW/EL = 1.01, ESL/EL = 0.56, slightly broadened posteriorly; surface densely covered with coarse punctures, with posterior sutural area and posterolateral angle slightly less punctate; surface between punctures without microsculpture. Hind wings fully developed.

Abdominal tergites III–V with middle portion almost impunctate, with transverse depressions at base, punctures before depressions distinctly coarse and dense; VII with whitish apical seam of palisade fringe.

Male with first four segments of foretarsus moderately dilated, sub-bilobed; segment II about as wide as apex of tibia; tergite VIII ( Fig. 6-1 View FIGURE 6 A) with basal ridge disrupted in middle; sternite VIII ( Fig. 6-1 View FIGURE 6 B) with three long setae on each side, apical margin with a very shallow middle emargination, with a small area around the emargination impuncate; sternite IX ( Fig. 6-1 View FIGURE 6 C) with basal portion very short and wide, apical margin with a deep emargination, with one long seta on each side; tergite X ( Fig. 6-1 View FIGURE 6 D) with basal side broadly concave, apical margin widely rounded; aedeagus in lateral view ( Fig. 6-1 View FIGURE 6 E) with apex of paramere not reaching that of median lobe; aedeagus in parameral view ( Fig. 6-1 View FIGURE 6 F) with paramere distinctly narrowed in middle portion, apex narrowly rounded ( Figs. 6 View FIGURE 6 D, 6-1G); median lobe nearly as wide as paramere, apex narrow and subacute; apical portion of paramere with four similar apical setae on each side, underside covered with numerous sensory peg setae, two groups along apex and lateral sides, other two medial groups forming two parallel longitudinal lines along midline ( Figs. 6 View FIGURE 6 D, 6-1G).

Female unknown.

Distribution. Bolitogyrus profundus sp. nov. is known only from the type locality in the south of Yunnan Province: Xishuangbanna Menglun Nature Reserve, at an altitude of 550 m. The specimen was collected from a log on the mountain in February.

Diagnosis. This new species is superficially similar to its congeners with reddish macula on elytra, but can be distinguished from others easily by the unique pattern of the sensory peg setae on the underside of the paramere.

Etymology. The specific name is from the Latin adjective profundus (deep), referring to the coarse punctures on elytra.
