scientific name

Strophostyles helvola (L.) Elliott
status

Phaseolus helvolus Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 2: 724. 1753, nom. & orth. cons.

"Habitat in Carolina." RCN: 5319.

Conserved type (Delgado Salinas & Lavin in Taxon 53: 839. 2004): U.S.A. South Carolina, Georgetown County, edge of marsh on ocean side of Beach Rd., about 1 mile N of its terminus on South Island, 22 Aug 1991, J.B. Nelson 11140 (USC; iso- MEXU).

Current name: Strophostyles helvola (L.) Elliott ( Fabaceae : Faboideae ).

Note: Verdcourt (in Taxon 46: 357. 1997) proposed a conserved type for the name, duly recommended by the Committee for Spermatophyta (in Taxon 48: 369. 1999), as was the conservation of the spelling “helvolus”. However, Delgado Salinas & Lavin (in Taxon 53: 839. 2004) subsequently found that the conserved type (U.S.A. North Carolina, Biltmore, sandy flats, 19 Aug 1896; Biltmore herb. No. 1302, US No. 966089) was identifiable as Strophostyles umbellata (Muhl. ex Willd.) Britton. They successfully proposed the replacement of Verdcourt’s type with another conserved type corresponding with current usage of S. helvola .
