status

Carduus acaulis Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 1199. 1753.

"Habitat in Europae pascuis apricis, depressis." RCN: 5974.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Burser XXI: 31 ( UPS) ; Herb. Linn. No. 966.45 ( LINN) ; [icon] in Bauhin & Cherler, Hist. Pl. Univ. 3(1): 62, 63. 1651.

Current name: Cirsium acaule (L.) Scop. subsp. acaule View in CoL ( Asteraceae ).

Note: Stearn (in Biol. J. Linn. Soc. 5: 10. 1973), in an account of Linnaeus’ Öland and Gotland journey of 1741, treated Vible in Gotland as the restricted type locality, and noted the existence of 966.45 (LINN). In his paper, he attributed restricted type localities irrespective of whether any material existed in LINN and, where specimens do exist, he does not refer to any of them as type specimens. This LINN material is not annotated so as to suggest it was collected in Gotland.
