Holotype. ♂, BRAZIL: Rio de Janeiro: Rio de Janeiro, 1.viii.1959, T. Borgmeier [ LACM ENT 235608 ] ( MZSP; examined).

Species recognition. This species has been confused with D. fuliginata , which differs by having much darker hind coxal lobe, as well as the group of peglike setae being a regular triangle, rather than an inverted one as in D. castaneicoxa . Furthermore, the line of peglike setae extends farther basally in D. castaneicoxa than in some other species.

Description. Body length: 2.25–2.34 mm. Head: Frons dark brown, second row of setae slightly concave. Flagellomere 1 rounded-oval, light brown. Palpus of normal size, light brown. Thorax: Scutum light brown. Scutellum light brown, with 2 pairs of setae; anterior seta one-half length of posterior seta. Pleuron yellowishbrown, but contrastingly brown dorsally. Mean costal length 0.55 wing length, range 0.53–0.58. Halter yellow. Legs yellowish-brown, except apex of hind femur darker. Forecoxa in lateral view yellow. Foretibia with 4 dorsal setae. Foretarsomeres slender, elongate. Midcoxa brown. Hind coxa yellow. Hind coxal lobe light brown, round. Posterior face of hind femur with basal line and more distal group of peglike setae; group extending dorsally to middle third of hind femur, often broader dorsally forming inverted triangle ( Figs 79– 80); more distally with depression that appears clear with light microscopy ( Fig. 280). Abdomen: Abdominal tergite 1 brown, tergites 2–6 dark brown with lighter posterior seam. Venter of abdomen yellow, with sparse setae. Male terminalia with epandrium yellowish-brown, hypandrium brown, and cercus yellow.

Natural history note. While attempting to attract specimens of the ant-parasitizing phorid genus Pseudacteon Coquillett by kicking nest mounds of fire ants ( Solenopsis saevissima (F. Smith)) , BVB collected the three specimens of D. castaneicoxa listed below. The flies seemed to be attracted to the disturbed nests.
